May Day, or International Workers Day, is almost here! To celebrate workers and all their contributions not only to the labor movement but to our quality of life, we are making some space for LIFE ( = food, connection, and fun).

There are many ways to support workers and better working conditions for all who labor this day, so whatever you choose, may it build up the common good of our city.

On a cold and rainy Tuesday morning, neighbors committed to building the common good went out to see for themselves how they can honor the dignity of people being swept by the City. Above is some of what they found.

To outreach workers who’ve been at this for years, nothing is shocking here. What people unfamiliar to chronic homelessness may not know is despite their name, Homeless Engagement Alternatives Liaison (HEAL) Team, unhoused folks were not engaged, they were surveilled. Alternative shelter and housing were not offered widely.

We are in the midst of illegal wars, the terror of 🧊, and everything costs too much to simply survive. Times are tough. Therefore, in the midst of all that is going on, we humbly ask you to join us this Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in our building (621 Tacoma Ave S) to get a sense of the challenges faced by educators and families who are trying to build healthy classrooms for students and educators across Tacoma.

Nearly 17% of all students in Tacoma receive special education services, which is just under 5,000 students. Special education resources, staffing models, and programs profoundly impact all classrooms in the city, regardless of the neighborhood or grade level. The health of special education really does impact us all.

The truth is, TEA needs our help, every day neighbors advocating for the additional staffing and resources needed to ensure healthy, sustainable classrooms for both students and educators.

Please consider supporting the event in one or both of the following ways:
Show up, listen, and support (You can RSVP in our story)
Share this event with your friends, family, and community over social media
If you have a connection to a community organization (a faith space, a local business, etc.) please share with them

We are grateful to Common Good Tacoma for the space to have our first annual SPED Town Hall on March 5th. Come hear from educators as they share their perspectives on the current state of special education in the city, and a vision for building healthy classrooms. RSVP at the link in the description.

As we’ve quoted before: “Every revolution is built on relationship.”

Get to know your neighbors!

When the national news feels loud and overwhelming — with ICE continuing to terrorize communities and fear being normalized — it’s easy to feel unsure about what to do. In moments like this, we’re reminded to zoom all the way in. Not just to your city. Not even your neighborhood. To your block.

This is what we mean by celebrating neighborism. You don’t have to be best friends with everyone next door. You just have to know their names and how to reach them. Knowing our neighbors allows us to share resources, exchange critical information, build trust, and keep each other safe — especially when systems fail us. This is how communities survive and resist in the face of ICE raids, displacement, and climate crisis.

The Super Bowl halftime show with Bad Bunny was fire🔥 and it reminds us that art is a powerful tool to reach people. Don’t stop speaking up against injustice but stick together and stay safe. Built locally, loudly, and keep the pressure on the people in power.

You know your community best. You know what it needs and how to show up for it. That’s why we built the Climate Action Policy Portal: a tool with district-specific actions designed to help neighbors turn care into collective action.

Start where you are. Start on your block.
We keep us safe. 🌱✊
