THANK YOU to everyone that attended the Greater Strathmore Neighborhood Association meeting last night ! It was an excellent turnout.
Local officials that met with neighbors included Common Councilor Donna Moore, County Legislators Maurice Brown and Chad Ryan, City Auditor Alex Marion, Commissioner Syeisha Byrd, Deputy Commissioner Chris Abbott, and Josh Wilcox from Syracuse Parks & Rec, and Tony Borelli - coordinator for Neighborhood Watch Groups of Syracuse.
The meeting was led by GSNA President Carol Harvey and shared info on upcoming events like the Mountain Goat race and Goat Fest party (200 block of Strathmore Dr) to cheer on the race on May 3, Strathmore Neighborhood Wide Garage Sale (including a Rummage Sale at JT Roberts School) on May 16, an Earth Day Clean-Up in Elmwood Park this Saturday, April 25 at Noon, and the Art on the Porches festival on September 12.
A new big event that is being planned is Pawsitively Strathmore in Onondaga Park on May 23. It will be a fun family event supporting accessible spay and neuter services for our southwest neighbors. There will be vendors, food vendors, pet photography, representatives from animal welfare organizations like Spay and Neuter Syracuse and Fixing to Help, and much more. Gudrun Rudd from the Strathmore Garden Club is looking for volunteers take care of the plantings in the beds and containers in neighborhood green spaces, including Onondaga Park. Comment here if you’d be interested in helping to plant and take care of the flower beds.
Updates from Syracuse Parks & Rec:
• Water quality in Hiawatha Lake. Neighbors have been concerned this spring after seeing an unusually high number of dead fish and even a couple of dead turtles. Parks & Rec has evaluated the conditions, along with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and has determined that this is a weather-related fish kill due to the depth and duration of ice coverage this winter.
Long periods of ice cover and deep snow prevent oxygen flow into lakes during the winter, leading to low dissolved oxygen levels for fish to breathe. Shallow lakes like Hiawatha Lake were even more susceptible. When all of the ice melted, dead fish rose up, causing the appearance of a large, sudden fish kill. A large number of the dead fish have been cleared out of the lake and they will look into clearing out some more that remain. Water quality testing will continue to happen and Parks & Rec is looking into different ways to improve the water quality. Broken fountains should soon be repaired and that will also help.
• There will be two week-long 4H Camps in Onondaga Park this Summer
• Three 2-week Swim lessons for kids will be held this summer
Strathmore neighbor Christian Freeman, working with Parks & Rec and other community members, shared plans to bring disc golf to Onondaga Park. It would provide an opportunity to bring more people outdoors to utilize the park (without disrupting other park use), especially parts of the park that are underutilized. Disc golf frisbees are the only equipment needed and sometimes will be provided for free. There are several courses in the county but this would be the first disc golf opportunity in the city.
Tony Borelli from the Neighborhood Watch Groups of Syracuse shared that while overall crime is down in the area, it’s important to continue to take actions to minimize crime, like making sure cars are locked and valuables are removed and securing window air conditioners in homes.
