ICE abductions continue to occur in Central New York. Since January, we know of *at least* the 25 incidents shown on this map. Each incident represents 1 or more of our neighbors, family members, and friends being suddenly abducted off the street and disappeared from our community. On average, every single week since January, 1-2 people have disappeared from our streets - fathers, brothers, sons, employees, neighbors. This is not exhaustive, but shows the incidents that were reported to and verified by SIRDN in Syracuse.

Thierno was about to leave for his shift as a delivery driver last September when he got a call from his lawyer. The 22-year-old had moved to New York City from Guinea in 2023, seeking to escape the violence and arrests directed at anti-government protesters there. Now, his lawyer was telling him that he had received a special status for young immigrants who have suffered abuse, abandonment, or neglect.

He was safe, he thought.

Seven months later, an immigration judge ordered him sent to Uganda — over 3,000 miles from his home country.

Thierno is one of an untold number of people with special immigrant juvenile status, or SIJ, who have received deportation orders in recent months. As recently as last year, it was rare for judges to order them deported. That is no longer the case under the Trump administration.

The change is set to hit New York — home to over a fifth of all SIJ petitioners — particularly hard. Here's what you need to know.
