As we commemorated the third anniversary of October 7, it was meaningful to highlight Orr Shalom’s vital work supporting at-risk children and youth in Israel.

Proud that the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation supports this important mission through the Gerald Getz Fund for Israeli Children’s Charities. Their stories of resilience remind us of the lasting impact of our community’s support.

Three years later, Israelis and Jews still feel the scars of the Hamas terror attacks and repercussions in our communities. This moment is a powerful reminder that when any group is targeted by hate, everyone’s safety and freedom are at risk.

JCRC is disturbed and disgusted by the tasteless decision by AMP and SJP to hold a protest and kite-flying event on October 7, the anniversary of the Hamas-led massacre in Israel, the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. For our community, October 7 is a solemn day of mourning for those who were murdered, r***d, brutalized, and taken hostage.

The inclusion of kite flying on October 7 is especially troubling given its history as an incendiary tactic against Israeli communities and farmland.

JCRC rejects and condemns any rhetoric or activity that glorifies, excuses, or minimizes the atrocities of October 7. We remain committed to supporting our community and ensuring that it remains informed, connected, and cared for as it contemplates the atrocities committed against Jewish and non-Jewish Israelis and others who suffered unspeakable harms on October 7. We call on all people of conscience to share our grief and lift us up as we recall the tragedy of that day.

We were grateful to welcome Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur to Jewish Toledo for a meaningful conversation with members of our community about issues that matter deeply to us, including antisemitism, Ohio-Israel relations, the security of Jewish institutions, and more.

Thank you to Congresswoman Kaptur for spending time with our community and engaging in an open and thoughtful discussion.

are relieved that the passengers and crew of the FlyDubai flight bound for Israel are safely home, following an apparent attempt to bring down the aircraft mid-flight.

We are deeply grateful to the pilot who, while injured, managed to open the cockpit door, to the crew members and passengers who acted swiftly to bring the plane to safety, and to the Saudi authorities for shepherding the passengers home. Their courage prevented what could have been an unspeakable tragedy. We wish the captain, and all those injured, a full and speedy recovery.

While the full details of what occurred are still emerging, what is clear is that in a moment of crisis, people came together to protect one another. That instinct — to stand up, to help, to refuse to let terror define the outcome — reflects the very best of the human spirit, and stands in stark contrast to whatever motivated this attack.

Jewish Federations will continue to monitor the situation closely and stand with our community and our partners across the region as more information becomes available.

Jewish Federations of North America condemn the violent extremist attacks against the Palestinian village of Jalud in the West Bank. Those responsible must be apprehended and brought to justice. We stand in support of the Israeli Defense Forces and law enforcement and urge decisive action to prevent further attacks and protect innocent civilians. As the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, said, these acts are a “moral stain, a blow to the rule of law and our most basic values as a nation and country.”

JCRC of Toledo stands in solidarity with the Jewish community in Belleville and Jewish communities everywhere facing very real threats. This incident is another reminder that security remains one of the highest priorities for Jewish institutions. We are grateful to the law enforcement officers who put themselves at risk to protect those gathered in prayer. Jewish communities deserve to gather, worship, and live openly and safely.

As we approach three years since October 7, our JCRC Director, Roy Büchler, reflects on how one episode of Fauda brought him back to that morning.

In this personal essay, Roy reflects on October 7, what resilience has looked like in Israel since, and how quickly the Israeli experience became wrapped in contentious narratives.

At its heart, the essay is about holding on to the lived experience of October 7 before it became a global argument, and refusing to let Israeli suffering be reduced to slogans.

Please note: the piece contains spoilers for Fauda Season 5, Episode 8, and discusses graphic depictions of the October 7 attacks and their aftermath.
