Robbie"s Roundup

Robbie"s Roundup Hi! I'm Robbie, a puppy in training for Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines. I was born June 10, 2025.

Thank you Mary Scott for sponsoring me in memory of your friend, Suzanne Zerkel. You can follow me on my journey to becoming a service dog.

My puppy raiser enlisted the help of her grandson for distraction training. It’s important for me to learn when I can play, and when I have to stay with my handler. I have to control the impulse to chase toys or people and stay put. I do find the little human quite interesting and it is sometimes hard to resist him.

I was at GDA for just over 3 weeks. I had lots of fun with my roommate and the kennel techs. Sometimes I missed being with my puppy raisers, but I really was having loads of fun. When Sandy picked me up I was so excited! I really was ready to go home. We still have a full house and it really feels like home.

I had my first kennel stay. It is important to get a kennel stay, so I am not scared of it when I have to be there. I had a roommate to play with and people worked with me. I didn’t much like being by myself because I could hear everyone doing something I was missing. I saw the vet because my ears were itchy. They gave me some medicine to stop it. Then Sandy and Russ picked me up and brought me back home. I was ready for a long nap.

When we went to skills, I was a little too excited and had to go to a quiet spot before doing the pretend vet exam. I did good at that. Once I calmed down, Sandy played the game with the Gentle Leader head harness. Sierra (Canine Development) saw her and thought she should demonstrate. I did really well in the demonstration. We had a puppy raisers meeting the next night. I had trouble settling and kept talking about it, interrupting the meeting a little. Cheryl (Service Dog Programs) told Sandy we needed to practice settling in different places. Sandy started doing that and putting rest periods in my schedule. I really need to work on this because it is an important skill for a service dog. I will practice hard to get this down.

We went to Kaiser so Sandy could fix her glasses - she is telling everyone I broke them. I don’t recall any such thing. Sitting quietly in a “Close” position is an important skill I have to develop. I have to be able to hold that position until released. I did mostly good at it. Sandy said I could be more quiet, and shouldn’t spread out so much when I settle down. 😏
