🚨 PLEASE BE AWARE: FERRET ADOPTION SCAM ALERT! 🚨
We want to share an important warning with our ferret community.
We recently learned that someone has been impersonating another shelter to scam a prospective adopter out of a deposit. Even more concerning, the scammer gave this person the actual address of the legit shelter and told her to meet them there! The shelter op only discovered what was happening when the girl called their business line because no one was there.
Thankfully, this gives us an opportunity to remind everyone to be cautious when looking to adopt or rehome a ferret.
❤️ PLEASE PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR MONEY!
🐾 Verify before you pay. If someone offers you a ferret online and asks for a deposit, pause and verify who you are dealing with. Contact the shelter directly using the phone number, email address, or website you find independently—not just the contact information the seller gives you.
⚠ A legit shelter will never ask for money upfront, sight unseen, as a deposit or as a hold
🐾 Don't trust a name or address alone. Scammers can copy a legitimate shelter's name, photos, and even its physical address. Just because those details look familiar doesn't mean the person you're talking to is actually associated with that organization.
🐾 Check email addresses carefully. Look at the entire email address, not just the sender's display name. A scammer can make an email look legitimate while sending it from an unrelated account.
🐾 Be cautious with Facebook rehoming groups and pages. Scammers can pose as individuals, breeders, or established shelters. Take the time to verify the source before sending money or making a long trip. (actually, don't send money in advance. period. And don't fall for the girft card scam)
🐾 When in doubt, contact the shelter directly. A quick phone call or message to the organization's official page could save you money, time, and a lot of heartache.
This situation is especially troubling because it doesn't just hurt the person being scammed. Impersonating a legitimate shelter can damage the reputation and trust that an organization has spent years building. It also puts other shelters and legitimate animal welfare organizations at risk.
And this is a reminder to our fellow ferret shelters: please be alert. Scammers are becoming increasingly brazen, and using a real organization's identity and address makes these scams even more convincing.
📢 PLEASE SHARE THIS POST! Help us spread the word through your own pages, websites, ferret groups, and rehoming communities. The more people who know what to look for, the harder it becomes for these scammers to succeed.
Our goal is simple: to help people find their new furry family members safely and to protect the legitimate organizations working hard on behalf of these animals.
A little verification can prevent a lot of trouble. Please be careful out there! ❤️🐾
