Part of our mission is to serve and educate. This was a double down on that! Special thanks to our Special Projects Committee for their time and energy in making this day special.

Bees, Bugs, and Blossoms” Family Fun Day at the Suttons Bay Library on Friday, March 20th, which our Special Projects committee and MSU Extension host, Nate Walton, took part in. The books displayed are ones the library staff selected on plants, growing, and pollinating. These books are paid for with funds our garden club donated to the Suttons Bay Library. Super fun afternoon, 35 children attended!

Since its inception in 2009, the mission of the By-The-Bay Garden Club of Suttons Bay has been “to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening; aid in the protection of native trees, plants, and birds; and participate in community beautification.”

The 2026 By-The-Bay Garden Club Judith Hoeffler Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 shall be awarded to a student attending a post-high school educational program in the fall of 2026, related to agriculture, botany, floriculture, forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture, land management/conservation, environmental studies, and/or related fields of study.

The applicant must be a resident of Leelanau County or a graduate of any Leelanau County high school. Applicants must submit a high school transcript from their last year of school attendance, two letters of recommendation – one from school personnel, and a 300-500-word essay stating how their post-high school studies support our club’s mission. Prior applicants, but not past awardees, will be considered.

Applications are due May 1, 2026.

Apple - Blueberry Crunch

1 (21 oz) can apple pie filling
1 (14oz) package frozen blueberries
1 cup of sugar divided
1 package white cake mix
1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup chopped walnuts, toasted

Spread the apple pie filling in a greased 13x9 inch pan.
Toss the frozen blueberries with 3/4 cup of sugar and spoon over the pie filling. Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the fruit and drizzle with the butter. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts and remaining 1/4 cup of sugar.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
