As your Chamber of Commerce, we don't promote our local business community because it's trendy. We do it because supporting local businesses is absolutely vital to Sutherland's survival.

Drive down Highway 30. Take a hard look. Subway. Big Eye Spinnerbaits. Vacant storefronts in our historic First Street. Sportsman's Cove for sale. Maline's Superfoods closing.

Some of these closures stem from factors beyond our control. But this much is true: every dollar we spend locally keeps our business community standing. Every purchase is a vote for Sutherland's future.

We're not asking you to spend money you don't have. We're asking you to make a choice: when you do shop, choose here first. Choose local. Choose the mom-and-pop shop over the chain. Choose the family business that reinvests in our town, that's here for every sports team or after-prom party sponsorship.

Whenever possible, shop Sutherland. Our businesses—and our town's survival—depend on it.

As a Chamber of Commerce, we love to share the good news about our business community. However, every now and then we have to share news that shatters us to our very core. It is a disaster for a community when their grocery store closes, and Sutherland is facing that disaster now. We so much appreciate the hard work and dedication Scott and Kelli have put into our hometown grocery store, and wish them all the best in their future.
