Our coral of the month for September is Pseudodiploria clivosa, also known as knobby brain coral.
It prefers very shallow reef flats, wave-swept zones, and lagoons, where it can handle intense sunlight and rough wave action.
Unlike the smooth domes of the symmetrical brain coral, this brain coral grows in irregular, knobby, or encrusting masses that conform to the shape of the rock or skeleton beneath it.

Check out this article about the Florida’s Coral Reef Restoration and Recovery Initiative, the part that Plant a Million Corals has to play in restoring the Florida Reef Tract, and why supporting these initiatives is imperative to protecting Florida.

Organizations that spent taxpayer money to build new facilities and train staff to work on the state-led project are now scrambling to find grants and private donations to keep the lights on.

On the reef, corals and macroalgae naturally compete with each other for space and sunlight, and grazers and herbivores help to mitigate algal overgrowth. However, in a land-based system, we often rely on forms of manual algae and pest removal, or as we like to call it T.L.C., for Tender Loving Care. Join one of our coral techs, as she helps these coral fragments get a competitive edge over their algal opponents!

Check us out! Our past intern turned staff member Arianna caught us in the act at ICRS (International Coral Reef Symposium). Our work with Seatrees Scripps Instn. of Oceanography and Samsung was showcased at the event! Arianna was presenting her masters work with Fragments of Hope (another PAMCF partner) and the USF Strong Coast project to incorporate Belizean coastal community priorities into National coral restoration planning. So great to “see” her as her research and career continues!

It's that time!

Check out this month's Coral of the Month: Mustard Hill Coral also known as Porites Astreoides (PAST)!

There is so much to love about PAST! It is the first coral species to recruit to an area where are coral reef will begin, with many scientists saying that it is the reason that other species choose an area to settle!
In our land-based nursery in Summerland Key, FL, we have more genotypes (genetic strains) of PAST than any other species. One of the reasons this is, is because the first coral to spawn in our tanks is a PAST coral. She has given us over 200 new recombinations of our resilient corals.
