16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence
From today 25 November, the world campaigns for 16 days of awareness for gender-based violence (GBV).
Some gender roles and expectations in our cultures, countries and communities create underlying stereotypes and discrimination that perpetuate gender inequality and subjects women and girls to a vicious cycle of gender based violence. This is often embedded in daily life and goes unrecognized. Eradication of gender-based violence is a precondition for women’s equal participation in political, social and economic life. The Netherlands condemns violence against all women and aims to promote gender equality and to create a world in which, every women and girl is treated with dignity and respect.
Gender based violence remains an issue and too many cases still go unreported. It is not a problem that only women should fight; boys and men equally have a role to play. Ending violence against women and ensuring women’s equal participation in society is for the benefit of each and every one of us. Our Ambassador and male colleagues show commitment to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Every woman and girl has a right to feel safe.
