Sometimes I wonder if horses have spent centuries trying to teach us the same lesson.

Not how to ride.

Not how to train.

Not how to win ribbons.

But how to listen.

A horse does not care how many books we’ve read, how many clinics we’ve attended, or how many years we’ve been around horses.

What matters to them is much simpler.

Do we notice when they are worried?

Do we recognize when they are uncomfortable?

Do we respect their boundaries?

Do we celebrate their preferences?

Do we care enough to hear what they are saying, even when it isn’t what we wanted to hear?

Listening sounds passive, but it may be one of the bravest things we can do.

Because real listening has the power to change us.

The moment we truly hear another being, we can no longer pretend we don’t know.

Perhaps that is why listening is so difficult.

And perhaps that is why horses keep offering us the lesson, over and over again.

Not demanding.

Not forcing.

Simply waiting for us to become quiet enough to hear.

We love seeing the horses fully let down and sleep, and it’s even cuter when they do it together! Simba and Jasper have been enjoying daily afternoon naps in the warm sunshine. Both of these handsome boys are with us for training from Kritter Ridge Equine Sanctuary.
