Fire permits available now !

Personal-use firewood permits are now on sale at our offices in WIllows, Upper Lake, Stonyford and Covelo.

To cut firewood on National Forest System lands you must have a personal use firewood permit.

The permit costs $2.00 per cord with a minimum purchase required of $20 for 10 cords. Permits are valid through the Dec. 31 2026.

Open trails 😊

The wet weather trail closure on Upper Lake Ranger District has been LIFTED as of this morning.

Please see a few safety notes if you are planning to ride this weekend:
⚠️Downed trees are likely after the recent winter storms so please ride with caution around blind curves.
🛑Riding around downed trees or other obstacles creates additional problems that damage soils and the trail system.
🚨There is a firefighter training happening this weekend at Middle Creek Campground. There could be traffic or crew activities in the campground and along Elk Mountain Rd about halfway to the summit.
➡️Report any slides, downed trees or other hazards on roads or trails to the local ranger station.

Upper lake trail closure information. I bet Stonyford side is next. A lot of rain fell.

⚠️A wet weather closure for OHV trails on the Upper Lake Ranger District is in effect as of 12am Feb. 17, 2026. Wet weather trail closures are lifted after 48 hours of no precipitation.

We are having a temporary schedule change to our office hours in Stonyford. Starting next week, the office will be open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays only. Upper Lake clean up party this weekend.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Upper Lake Ranger District is hosting volunteer work days this weekend on our OHV trails! Meet up at 9 a.m. at Penny Pines Campground this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10-11.

We have had a TON of rain and wind the last few weeks, 15 inches in 10 days and 50 mph winds, which means a large number of downed trees. Trails are still closed, but we are working hard with our volunteers to remove downed trees while soils have time to dry out. We need people to help with trail assessments, removing branches and debris so our trails are safe again. Hope to see you there! 💪
