Avalon Nature Preserve

Avalon Nature Preserve Preserve entrance is located across from the Stony Brook Grist Mill on Harbor Road. We therefore ask your cooperation in observing our policies.

We are working to maintain and, where appropriate, restore the natural elements of the park and preserve. We hope you will join us in taking the long view toward protecting Avalon's ecological communities in perpetuity. Kindly keep your dog leashed, walk your bicycle through the park portion, and carry out everything you bring in with you, leaving plants and animals alone so they may live their na

tural lives. For the health and welfare of wildlife, we do not supplement their food supplies; we ask you to respect this practice and refrain from feeding the ducks or any other animals in the park or preserve. Between dawn and dusk you may enjoy the gifts of nature you find here. Please keep in mind our desire to provide all visitors a safe, peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.

Behind the scenes 📹

Maintaining a preserve takes ongoing care from habitat restoration to managing invasive species. It’s a blend of science, stewardship, and dedication to protecting this space for the future.

At Birdsfoot Farm, restoration is also rooted in regenerative farming practices that help rebuild soil health, support biodiversity, and create a more resilient working landscape. Through no-till gardening, rotational grazing, and thoughtful land management, we’re continuing to restore and nurture the farm ecosystem.

Thanks to our partners at Aronica Plant Healthcare, LLC, Larry Weaner Landscape Associates, Harrington's Organic Land Care for supporting our Maintenance & Farm teams in the continued care of Avalon’s preserve.

Meadows may look simple, but they are one of the most important habitats for biodiversity. They provide food, shelter, and space for pollinators, birds, and countless other species. 🌾🌼🌿

🔍What does conservation look like at Avalon?

It’s the ongoing work of protecting habitats, restoring ecosystems, and making thoughtful decisions that benefit the land long-term. One of our efforts include wood stack ribbons, which are designed to provide habitat for many of the preserve’s native fauna. Crafted from the timber cleared to make room for native plant species, the “ribbons” will slowly decay, returning valuable nutrients to the soil. 🪵🌿

Happy Anniversary to US! 🥂

25 years ago this month, Avalon Nature Preserve (formerly Avalon Park and Preserve) first opened its gates to the community. What began as a simple idea to create a natural place where Paul would have loved to spend time grew into something much larger. His vibrant spirit continues to shape our mission, guiding our commitment to protection and restoration. We believe Paul would take great joy in seeing the strong connections that now exist between visitors and the thriving forests and meadows that make up the preserve.

In 1998, we partnered with Andropogon Associates, a landscape architecture and ecological planning firm, to help restore 84 acres of land acquired from The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (8 acres) and the Coleman Family (76 acres). Together, we worked to return the property to its native habitat while thoughtfully creating a peaceful space for the community to enjoy.

Construction began in 1999, and by June 2001, we proudly opened our gates, inviting the public to experience Avalon’s natural beauty. Over time, the preserve has become a cherished hidden gem, known for its scenic trails and birdwatching opportunities. In 2016, Avalon expanded with the addition of two more properties: Shore Farm (28.5 acres), acquired from the Lawrence Family, and East Farm Preserve (55 acres), acquired from The Nature Conservancy.

As Avalon has grown, so too has our vision. In May 2018, we launched our Comprehensive Master Plan, centered on three guiding principles: Protect, Restore, and Inspire. That same year, we also acquired Birdsfoot Farm (formerly Perry Farm), a 46.5-acre property from the Lund Family. At the time, much of the land was fallow or overtaken by invasive species. Today, Birdsfoot Farm is being revitalized through conservation and regenerative farming practices, with the goal of returning it to productive agricultural use.

We look forward to continuing to serve our community by providing a safe, welcoming, and vibrant natural space for years to come. Thank you for your ongoing support and stewardship, and a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated maintenance and ranger staff, whose hard work makes it all possible.

⭐ Remember: We’re guests here!

Wildlife calls Avalon home. Observing from a distance helps keep animals safe and allows them to behave naturally. Please don’t feed or approach wildlife, respect is the best way to connect with nature.

⚠️Why Leave No Trace Matters ⚠️

Whatever you bring in, please bring out. Leaving no trace ensures every visitor experiences the preserve as it was meant to be: natural, peaceful, and undisturbed.

✨Our favorite and most applicable principals from LNT are:

1️⃣Dispose of Waste Properly
➡Pack it in, pack it out. Put litter, even crumbs, peels, and cores - in garbage bags and carry it home.
➡Pack out your pet’s p**p! Dog p**p can spread disease and pollute water.

2️⃣Leave What You Find
➡Leave plants, rocks, and historical items as you find them so others can enjoy them.
➡Treat living plants with respect. Carving, hacking or peeling plants may kill them.
➡Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species.

3️⃣Respect Wildlife
➡Observe wildlife from a distance and never approach, feed, or follow them.
➡Human food is unhealthy for all wildlife, and feeding them starts bad habits.

4️⃣Be Considerate of Others
➡Be considerate when passing others on the trail.
➡Keep your pet under control to protect it, other visitors, and wildlife.
➡Listen to nature. Avoid making loud noises or yelling.
➡Be sure the fun you have outdoors does not impact anyone else. Remember, other visitors are there to enjoy the outdoors too.
