In our latest blog, we shared the work of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and how we support them.

But have you ever wondered what a day in their life looks like?

Walk with Rosemary through a day in the community and see what it takes to make healthcare more accessible to households.

One knock can start a healthier community.

Meet Rosemary, one of the 1,265 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) we support in partnership with the County Government of Tharaka-Nithi.

Since 2020, these CHPs have reached households with more than 1.4 million visits - with key health messages and support.

But, what does it take to reach the households? And how does HopeCore support the CHPs?

Read our latest blog: The Health System You May Not See: Inside the Work of CHPs, and discover the people and support behind the numbers.

Your heart never takes a day off. Maybe today, you should give it some attention.

It beats while you sleep, work, laugh, walk, worry, and even while you’re busy scrolling this post!

But heart health is something we often remember only when there’s a problem.
Globally, cardiovascular diseases claim about 19.8 million lives every year.

At HopeCore, we do our part by screening communities for blood pressure and, through our nutrition program, identify children with congenital heart diseases and link them to the care they need.

This World Heart Day, help us reach more hearts.

Your donation can support health screening access to care for children and families in our communities.
Donate today and help us keep caring for more hearts.

Imagine changing your name because a place had such a profound impact on your life.

That is Martin’s story.

A friend told him about the HopeCore Youth Center, a safe place with free WiFi. That was enough to bring him through the door.

He never realised that those same doors would turn his drug addiction into a success story; thanks to the drug awareness sessions and a mentor who always made sure he didn't fade away quietly by contacting him each time he missed a session, Martin was able to find the support he needed to get rid of his addiction permanently.

The experience changed his life so deeply that he changed his name to 'Barry Wood', after HopeCore's Barry Wood Youth Center that has become such an important part of his life.

Today, Martin has turned his life around, is employed as a technical mason and welder, and is honestly and proudly putting food on the table.

His situation shows that proper support, given at the right time, makes a real difference.

That is the ripple effect that we are aiming for. Just this year, we have counselled 474 young people on topics including drugs and substance abuse, healthy relationships, and stress management.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome back Jan Zachry and Debi Solberg, our longtime friends and supporters who have been visiting HopeCore through MedTreks International since 2018.

With every visit, Jan and Debi have shared their expertise through capacity building and training for our staff, helping strengthen our team and the work we do in the communities we serve.

Jan also serves on both U.S and Kenya HopeCore boards reflecting the continued commitment to HopeCore and its work.

This year was no different, as they once again spent time with our team in the field, sharing knowledge and strengthening our capacity.

Thank you Jan and Debi for continuing to show up, investing in the HopeCore team, and walking alongside us in creating lasting change.

Here is to many more years of friendship, partnership, learning, and providing hope together!

Every loan cycle is an opportunity to learn, grow, and invest wisely.

For Itara B Self Help Group, and many other groups we have funded, the journey into their third loan cycle began with business training, equipping members with the knowledge and skills to make informed investment decisions before receiving their funding.

“The training has really helped me improve how I run my dairy farming business. I have learned about business planning and proper record keeping, and I now have a better understanding of how to manage finances and expand business.” Nicholas.

After the training, the group received a total of KES 850,000 ($6,568), with each of its eight members planning to invest their share in dairy farming, ice cream sales and other businesses.

A healthier smile can be the start of a healthier future.

Poor oral health affects more than just a smile, it can impact a child’s overall health, learning, productivity, and growth.

Thanks to the generous donation from Dr. John Buzza and Kathy Sangster, we distributed a total of 702 toothbrushes, 1,115 tubes of toothpaste, 206 packs of dental floss, and 76 dental pouches to health club members across selected schools.
For many of these children, this was their first access to basic dental care supplies.

Now, they have more than just toothbrushes, they have the knowledge and tools to become oral health champions, encouraging good hygiene practices among their peers, families, and communities.

Blessy's story is one of resilience and hope.

For years, poor vision made her journey as a student difficult. Reading the blackboard, following lessons, and keeping up with her classmates became a daily challenge. Her mother could not afford the care she needed.

Thankfully, a HopeCore vision screening at her school helped identify the problem and connected Blessy to the treatment and follow-up care she needed.

Today, Blessy is a Grade 8 learner, excelling in her studies. Her dream? To become a doctor, provide care, and help others live healthier lives.

Since 2020, 170,449 learners have received vision screening, with the 5,700 learners identified with visual abnormalities facilitated with treatment, spectacles, referral, and life-changing glasses

You are not alone.

Have you ever had one of those days when you just needed someone to ask, “Are you okay?” And not just ask, but actually stay and listen?

Sometimes, that simple conversation can mean more than we realize.

Today, on World Su***de Prevention Day, take a moment to check in on someone. Ask how they are really doing. Listen. Be there.

Through our Youth Center and School Health program, HopeCore provides counseling and support to help young people navigate life’s challenges.

Together, we can help prevent su***de.
