The 20’s Revisited by James Clum

These paintings are interpretations of old photos and movie stills from the 1920’s. Most of them were from Paris and 2 others were from Berlin. Each depicts aspects of the human condition and social issues that existed at the time and persist to the present. Each displays individuals adjusting to the changes of Modernism.

Each photo has a description in the caption.

SAA artist Christina Collins won the Virginia Price Memorial Award for her excellence in watercolor at the Salt Fork Art Show.

Junior member, Kailynn McNally won third place in an art show that pitted her talent against students from all the Jefferson County Schools. Congratulations artists. We're glad you're part of the SAA.

James Clum is the Steubenville Art Association featured Artist of the Month at the Fort Steuben Visitor Center on Third Street. James is one of the most talented artists Steubenville has ever seen. His paintings leave one to question if it's not a photograph. This is an art show you must see. All the art pieces are for sale.

A note from James:
All pieces shown are interpretations of photos and movie stills from Berlin and Paris in the 1920s. They are 100 year old reflections of social issues that still exist today.

ISO:

The Steubenville Art Association is looking for a projector system like the schools at one time used in the classroom. The projector sat on a flat surface, something was drawn or written on a clear sheet and the image could be projected onto a screen or wall. We think it will be helpful to the art workshops if the instructor could demonstrate how to do a drawing this way. Don't want wifi or bluetooth just a basic old school type one. Anyone know if they still make them? Anyone have one they're willing to part with? Let us know.

Come and "tangle" with the Steubenville Art Association on Saturday, July 11 from 10AM until 1PM at the Center of Music and Art in Wintersville. Zentangle is a relaxing way to make some basic lines look like a fascinating 3D drawing. You don't have to be an artist to do this kind of drawing . Cost is $25 and includes the supplies you'll need.

The Steubenville Art Association is sad to announce the sudden passing of long term member Jim Watson.

The SAA was founded in 1946 and in their first set of bylaws, it was written that they would have a "Spring Exhibit" every year thereafter. And they did, with the exception of the two Covid years and 2025 when a venue was not available.

Since about 2000, Jim and JoAnn Watson have been in charge of these "Spring Exhibits." They made all the plans, wrote the prospectus, seeked sponsors, contacted artists for entries, helped move large equipment, hung the artpieces, documented intake, procured professional judges, ordered winning certificates and ribbons, and well you name it. Anything and everything that needed done was either performed by the Watsons or under their direction.

Because of the success of the Spring Exhibit by the Watsons, the SAA and Youngstown State University - Steubenville will continue the art show this September. The show has been renamed the 77th Annual SAA Exhibit and will feature a Special Award in honor of the memory of Jim Watson for many years to come.

Now, the SAA has lost several of its older members over the past few years. And every one of them was appreciated and viewed as a part of the SAA family. Every one was talented and each one made the SAA better for their input. All are missed and all are thanked for what they have done for us.

But, because of Jim's service over the past 25+ years, we are focusing on him. Jim was one of the best artists ever to join the SAA. He could make every twig in a bird's nest look like an exquisite painting on it's own. He did the kind of paintings you wanted to touch to feel the flowers and the trees, his artistic realism and detail was remarkable.

Not only did Jim serve the SAA, he was also friend to all other members. He was so respected not only for his artistic talent but also for being a wonderful human being.

As Jim has risen above the clouds, and looks at the beauty of the heavens, I like to stop and wonder what he is painting now. Enjoy it, Jim. We'll see it when the rest of us get up there.
Thank you, Jim and JoAnn.
