A quick follow up to the recent church attack where the doors were breached by a vehicle driving inside. Information is still coming out about this incident and we are learning what we can to help others.
A vehicle driven inside a facility can increase the damage done by an attacker and in this specific case we are learning that the vehicle had explosives inside. You want vehicles stopped as far from the populated areas as possible to reduce the damage a vehicle can do and to reduce the payload an attacker can carry/bring inside. You don't want an attacker to be able to bring additional weapons or people inside easily or quickly.
For physical protection to stop or deter vehicle attacks into a building, barriers of many types can be considered. If your access points are at or close to ground level or can be driven up by a vehicle, bollards can be installed to stop this type of attack. Bollards can be exposed or they can be concealed inside planters; this can reduce the appearance of a security element if deemed unattractive or undesired by some while being hidden in plain sight. Dirt filled planter boxes can be extremely heavy and if a bollard is installed properly inside of them, they are even harder to move. Most normal sized vehicles can be stopped by large dirt filled planters. Planters can also be used as a stand off barrier to keep vehicles further away from buildings in a general sense. If a vehicle is going to be used as a bomb, you want to keep it as far away as possible to minimize the impact to the populated areas.
Remember - security should always be layered. If one layer fails, there should be additional layers to help cover the flaw of the others. Think of it as rings of protection. Your parking lot greeters may be layer one to watch for threats. Your door greeters may be layer two to get a close personal observation of people entering. An additional layer can be security team members inside the facility at various locations. Cameras, law enforcement, locked doors - they can all be part of the layered approach to improving safety.
