A quick follow up to the recent church attack where the doors were breached by a vehicle driving inside. Information is still coming out about this incident and we are learning what we can to help others.

A vehicle driven inside a facility can increase the damage done by an attacker and in this specific case we are learning that the vehicle had explosives inside. You want vehicles stopped as far from the populated areas as possible to reduce the damage a vehicle can do and to reduce the payload an attacker can carry/bring inside. You don't want an attacker to be able to bring additional weapons or people inside easily or quickly.

For physical protection to stop or deter vehicle attacks into a building, barriers of many types can be considered. If your access points are at or close to ground level or can be driven up by a vehicle, bollards can be installed to stop this type of attack. Bollards can be exposed or they can be concealed inside planters; this can reduce the appearance of a security element if deemed unattractive or undesired by some while being hidden in plain sight. Dirt filled planter boxes can be extremely heavy and if a bollard is installed properly inside of them, they are even harder to move. Most normal sized vehicles can be stopped by large dirt filled planters. Planters can also be used as a stand off barrier to keep vehicles further away from buildings in a general sense. If a vehicle is going to be used as a bomb, you want to keep it as far away as possible to minimize the impact to the populated areas.

Remember - security should always be layered. If one layer fails, there should be additional layers to help cover the flaw of the others. Think of it as rings of protection. Your parking lot greeters may be layer one to watch for threats. Your door greeters may be layer two to get a close personal observation of people entering. An additional layer can be security team members inside the facility at various locations. Cameras, law enforcement, locked doors - they can all be part of the layered approach to improving safety.

Another church attack. Please make sure your church is seeing the continued threat of violence and taking steps to protect your congregation. Talk to your church leadership and plan and practice what to do. Contact your local law enforcement and ask them to help you create a plan. Do you have someone assigned to your parking lot/exterior during services? Do you have a communications link (radios) to alert others instantly to take action that you have practiced? Having a trained and prepared safety person outside and inside can make a big difference in protecting your church. Are you protecting your child areas? Are you preparing for Medical events and fire? Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by today's events.

A terrible incident today at a Catholic School and church taking the lives of children. These horrible events should prompt you to take additional action to help prevent this type of incident at your church or school. Protect the children and your parishioners. Have security in place to deter and respond quickly to potentially stop and minimize the threat as much as possible. If you are outside our area contact your police or Sheriff and ask if they provide security consultations to help you improve your security. If you are in Bulloch County we can help coordinate a safety inspection for your church or school. Contact us if we can help you. There is no cost to Bulloch County houses of worship or private schools for a standard inspection.

With the most recent church shooting being stopped quickly after the quick response by a church member (hitting the attacker with their vehicle) and an armed security team member stopping the threat, it highlights that your church should be planning ahead. Have a plan, practice the plan, talk to other churches that already have a security team and learn from them. It doesn't have to be complicated - in fact, simple is often better.

All it takes is a few people dedicated to helping keep others safe. Even if you have just 1 person that is willing to be a special "greeter" at your church, that might be all you need to improve your security enough. Having a plan and practicing that plan can make all the difference in saving lives and being ready to assist with medical events (which are more common).

Do you have 1st Aid Kits in plain site ready to use? Do those kits have what they need? Do you have a defibrillator (AED)? How about fire extinguishers mounted in plain site? Who is trained to respond when they are needed? Do you have people trained in CPR and other certificates?

Many churches have former military, law enforcement and doctors and nurses in the congregation that can add to the strength of your church but you have to ask them and plan in advance to be most effective.

Our Mission - Improve Church Safety Throughout Bulloch County Georgia

Our goal is simple: Improve church safety and security throughout Bulloch County Georgia. We want to educate and assist churches in ways that will help them improve safety for their members and visitors to their facilities. We coordinate safety discussions, training and law enforcement together to create a more efficient way for churches of all sizes to learn about safety and security and how they might want to consider implementing various options to better protect their membership. Topics include: Security, Medical Responses, Fire Safety, Law Enforcement Partnerships and how your church can use safety teams to improve the hospitality at your church.

After seeing numerous churches having similar issues and concerns and trying to reinvent the wheel themselves, we knew there was a better way. By bringing people with similar concerns together, we can help spread the word in a more organized way so that more people in Bulloch County benefit from the shared expertise.

If you have questions or would like to be considered to be a speaker or trainer at one of our events or if you would like to become a sponsor, contact Nick Propps at (912) 225-0500 or [email protected]
