Meet Patrick Madigan, CrimsonRise Waterfront Run, Walk & Roll for Autism 2026 Honoree

Patrick Madigan is an 18-year-old college student with autism who has overcome significant communication challenges throughout his life. Although he is verbal today, Patrick was nonspeaking until age six. With the unwavering support of his family, he learned to build confidence, overcome challenges, and pursue his goals.

A graduate of Monsignor Farrell High School, Patrick developed a strong sense of perseverance, independence, and determination. One of his proudest accomplishments is becoming a runner. Having never stepped foot on a track, Patrick challenged himself to try something new and discovered a passion that helped him overcome fears, build confidence, and develop greater resilience. His journey as a runner has been supported by a dedicated coach who has played an important role in his success.

Today, Patrick is a sophomore at Rider University, where he studies Journalism with a concentration in Sports Journalism and Sports Media. Passionate about sports and communication, he hopes to build a career sharing stories and working in the world of sports. Living away from home during his freshman year also helped Patrick become more independent, responsible, and confident.

Patrick’s journey demonstrates that autism does not define his abilities or his future. Through determination, family support, and a willingness to challenge himself, he continues to pursue his goals and discover what is possible.

We are thrilled to honor Patrick at the 2026 CrimsonRise Waterfront Run, Roll & Walk for Autism and celebrate his perseverance, accomplishments, and continued pursuit of his goals. We are proud to have Patrick as part of this year’s event and look forward to celebrating all that he has achieved and all that lies ahead.

A dream, now built in brick and heart.

CrimsonRise — cofounded by nonspeaking spellers Nicholas D'Amora, Tejas Rao Sankar, William Jusino, and Cristofer Puleo — held its formal inaugural event, joined by Borough President Vito Fossella and Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo, together with friends and family, major donors, community leaders, and business leaders whose support makes CrimsonRise possible.

Our building now carries a name we hold close to our hearts: The Nicholas D'Amora Center, in honor of our cofounder Nicholas, whom we tragically lost. Nicholas was a powerful public speller who stood before educators and parents and won their hearts and minds — inspiring so many to embrace spelling as a form of communication and giving voice to spellers across Staten Island and beyond.

This milestone caps a remarkable season of rising:
In July, CrimsonRise Spellers were inducted into the Susan M. Daniels Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame as mentors who expand opportunities for the disabled — standing side by side with disability policy experts, scholars, researchers, and advocates of high standing from around the country.

We published the fifth book in our series of lesson books, well received around the world.

We returned from Motormorphosis, where spellers Max Asofsky helped open the conference on a panel and Tejas Rao Sankar delivered a keynote presentation, and Lakshmi Rao Sankar made multiple presentations.

And we've received multiple requests from speller communities to consult on replicating this first-of-its-kind model.

Today, CrimsonRise stands in a beautiful 4,000-square-foot facility — intentionally built to create the circumstances for more and more nonspeakers to rise.
