OK, I forgot to post yesterday for our fun feather ID Friday
Now it’s fun for feather ID Saturday lol

There are three feathers in the picture and they all three came from one of our amazing educational ambassadors

Every day, the barred Owl that was caught in fishing line that was discovered on June 7 , and rescued on June 8
He is getting stronger every day
He is eating well he is still very underweight and on restricted enclosure activity
Such a precious soul, every day I’m thankful for those that stepped up and helped him
And all I can do is continue to help in his recovery

Not the best pictures, but you can see what I’m dealing with lol
The last two intakes were not birds of prey
But they were in need of help that’s for sure
The green Heron is an adult
They had a willow tree go down in the storm last Friday
He is not eating on his own, but when I go to hand feed him, he will grab it and eat like a pig

And the little skunk was found without Mom around there was a second sibling like I had stated earlier, but they were not able to get it
I looked and could not find it
But this one is not doing very good. I have been working with it around the clock.
It was so very thin. I’m sure that it is blood sugar that it’s dealing with.
Poor thing, she is definitely a fighter
Prayers and good vibes definitely are needed for both

As far as everyone else goes, all the screech owls barred, owls, baby great horned owl and young red shouldered hawk are doing very good

The red tailed hawk that was sprayed with anhydrous is still here very alert, struggling to feed herself

And the barred owl that was found with the fishing line wrapped around at hanging from a tree
Has moved up to a larger enclosure
He is still on the mend. He was so very weak and thin.
But the condition of his feathers he needed to be in a larger enclosure. They were already in terrible shape.
He is perching, which will help with the feather condition
And he is eating like a pig
He is still extremely underweight so lots of R&R and good food

The pigeon from a Wabash factory
Which they kindly named peppermint
Had the broken leg and was still being fed by mom and dad but had sour crop
Is still being hand fed, but I’m encouraging him to eat on his own. The wrap is off his leg and he is starting to put weight on it.

We also had a large turtle come in that needed some repair on her shell
She has since been repaired and has been released

We have a Baltimore Oriole male that came in several weeks ago that was found unable to fly. He is eating very well and gaining a lot of weight which he was very underweight so very hopeful for his future.

Just a hodgepodge of all sorts of things lol

If anyone out there has been following the story about the Barred Owl that was caught in fishing line on the Tippecanoe river west of Rochester, Indiana
I want to give a special shout out to the couple from “ Nightfall woods wildlife sanctuary”
They are the ones that did the rescue of this unfortunate bird. Here are the pictures.
Please, if you can go to their page follow this diligent, ambitious young couple and their good work towards
If you can donate towards their cause
They came from Hamilton County all the way to Fulton County took their own time to rescue this bird, and like every other licensed asked for nothing in return
It is the goodness in the hearts of those dedicated to wildlife rehab that makes this job that we do worthwhile
The goodness that we feel in our hearts rarely manifest in any money in our pockets
It’s all we can do to take care of the wildlife and need to come to us, but to be selfless and diligent and do the work we do it truly does take a village

Again, please, if you can donate to them that would be helpful to all the wildlife they care for and go above and beyond for
A good wildlife rehabber does not put themselves on a pedestal
They do not dedicate their lives for money or fame
It is all about helping wildlife. I do believe they are on the right track. Their hearts are definitely in the right place.

And PS the fishing line Barred owl moved outside this morning. He is still weak and needs to put a lot of weight back on.
But he is eating like a trooper
I was hoping moving outside would give him some mental stimuli
He still needs lots of prayers and good vibes in his way and I will keep everyone updated

Update…..
After feeding the babies, I took off and went to this area
There are bean fields which are easy to view
But the field to the south of the T Rd. is corn
Almost impossible to see through it. It’s just the height that’s annoying.
I saw no dead bodies of mama
Smelled no skunk smells
Not sure what was going on in this situation, but if anybody travels through there on a regular basis, there’s a possibility they might see some activity in the near near future

Last night, someone found a tiny baby skunk one eye open
Extremely emaciated
There was at least another one in the area that they were not able to get
If anyone lives anywhere near this area, please let me know
I do believe they are going to need rescued ASAP

A little late for our monthly ambassador highlight
But it’s been crazy
Our ambassador of the month is Cochise
Our American Kestrel
The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon
People often ask if they can fly as fast as a peregrine falcon
No, but they can fly up to 45 mile an hour
They are common in Indiana with that being said their numbers are declining due to habitat loss
They are tree cavity dwellers, which means they build their nest in a tree cavity that was made by a woodpecker and slightly enlarged by a squirrel
They also can be found in the soffits of decaying buildings and sheds
They can also build their nest in nooks and crannies of rundown buildings in the city
They will also take to nest boxes that people put up
If that interests, you go to the library and find the accurate dimensions for their boxes or Google will fill in any information that you may need to build one

They are a bird of prey that you want to have visit your backyard. They not only eat Mice and Songbirds, but they eat insects like Beatles and grasshoppers and small snakes.
They might even eat a few frogs
They diligent little hunters
They can be spotted as you drive down the highway, sitting on the powerline scoping out the sides of the road
Here is a gross but informative thing to know as they’re watching the sides of the road. They’re looking for the urine trail of a vole or a mouse.
How do they see it? Well, they say the urine trail glows like a fluorescent glow stick. 😳
Their eyes will follow the trail and they know at the end of it. They’re going to probably find dinner.
They come off of the electric line and they can hover just like a helicopter above the ground
Until they know the right exact time to drop down, sn**ch up their prey and it never knew what got it
Their tiny little talents are sharp and they squeeze their dinner and in a matter of seconds, it is dead
They take it back up to the powerline and they start picking tiny pieces as they eat their dinner they eat the bones and the fur
It will be digested in their crop and what they don’t utilize will be coughed up the following day in the form of a pellet
The pellet might not be much bigger than a pencil eraser
But it is the casting material that was not digested

They are known to have very large clutches up to seven youngsters
The mother takes care of the incubation and the tending to the tree cavity and youngsters while the father hunts for dinner
The mother and father can each eat to Mice a day
By the time the youngsters are a week old each one can eat a whole mouse a day and by two weeks that has increased
So father must be a very good experienced Hunter
When the youngsters start getting their adult feathers in, they will ledge from the nest
This is when life gets very very challenging. They cannot fly for two days after fledging often they go straight to the ground if they can manage to get off of the ground and stay amongst the canopy near the nest the parents will continue to feed them and hopefully teach them how to hunt.
It won’t be long, usually a month or so after fledging they are on their own and many times much sooner than that
They might be hunting small insects in your yard. It is not something that they can live off of, but it helps them to perfect their hunting ability.
Sadly, 89 to 90% of all birds of prey do not survive the first year due to lack of hunting skills so it’s very important. They pay attention to their parents.

American kestrels are about 21-24 inches from wing to wing
And they weigh 2.8 to 5.8 ounces
The males are smaller than the females and more brightly colored

In 2015 Cochise was admitted as a nestling
He was found in a parking lot in Wabash
There was no tree building or anything in sight that had indicated he had came from it
He was stinky, dirty, and not in good shape at all
Luckily, the rescuer acted quickly
And we were able to save this little falcon’s life
But right away I noticed he wasn’t quite right
Both of his wings had not developed properly
Whether this was simply a birth defect, or due to some type of pesticide herbicide, something that his parents had fed him, we will never know
But his wings are not fully developed
So he was never going to fly
He was deemed unreliable and we were able to get permits to use him in education
He has gone into retirement
But I will still take him out to some programs if I feel he’ll have a good time I say that because he still has a lot of energy, but he has definitely slowed down in his older age

The past two days have been crazy, crazy crazy crazy
I say that with enthusiasm lol
Sunday was such a roller coaster day
Many calls about baby deer which if I have an outlet for them and by that I mean a licensed rehabber that I know will take them and I discuss this thoroughly with them
I truly love, baby, deer but sadly hunting season breaks my heart
I will help in emergencies, but only when I know that I can count on my dear rehab friends
Then we went to a call about an adult bald eagle on the side of the road near Medaryville
I grabbed a tote and off I went
Sadly, when I got to the location, the beautiful adult bald eagle had already expired
It was probably a female. She was very good weight. She was beautiful, but she had been hit even though there were no apparent injuries.
I loaded her up so that she can be packaged and sent to the eagle repository where the native American Indians will have rights to her remains

Then I got a call about a red tail hawk
This was from Fletcher’s lake area
The gal said someone knocked on her door and was standing there with a hawk in a box
He told her he found it. Would she find someone to help it?
Bless her heart she was confused, but she did exactly what he asked
She had her hands full, making lunch for her toddlers
But this bird was in bad shape
And needed help ASAP and she knew it
There are signs of head trauma, but I truly believe the bird had been sprayed by a chemical spray like anhydrous
Its eyes are cloudy it’s got in voluntary head movement and on the way home it puked
And I don’t mean a pallet it puked up its meal, which was a fresh mouse
And it was very peculiar smelling
Getting home I treated it with detox
And then gave it treatment for sour crop
She is being hydrated with special formula and this evening I was able to give her a small rat
We’ll see if she can keep it down

Then Tippecanoe River State Park
Called there was a juvenile bald eagle down behind the park
As I was getting in the car, another call about a barred owl that was hanging by fishing line on the Tippecanoe west of Rochester
I grabbed a second tote
Spoke with the lady as I was on the way, giving her directions and she was sending me pins to the location
Before I got out of town, she texted me that they had to leave the area and the bird was free from hanging by the fishing line, but they were not able to retrieve the bird. My heart was broken.
But there wasn’t much I could do. I truly did understand they were in kayaks and very limited.
But the area was very remote and hard to get to no boat launches nearby

Onto the bald eagle youngster
After getting there, it was beautiful private property. Mom was nearby. The second eaglet was close to the nest, and the one was on the ground.
He hopped around into a very wooded ditch area and looked fine. There were no signs he was injured. Granted that was just a judgment call.
There were no flies around the bird
I made the decision to leave the bird and the land owner said they would check on it today

First thing this morning, another baby deer call
I searched my deer rehab connections
It turned out our dear friends at wildcat Creek were able to accept it. Thank you so much guys.

As I was working on that situation, I got a text about a red tailed hawk that was hit near Nices bridge near Pulaski
It didn’t look good. I reached out to someone. I know that lives nearby, but they were not home.
So off, I went when I got there the bird was off of the road, but had gotten into a cattle field that was surrounded by electric fence
I impressed myself, lol thinking out of the box I traveled through a field till I found some very large branches
Put one in my car even left the hatch open. It was so big.
Got near the bird and was able to get it to latch onto the branch and pull it close to the fence where I could grab it
I’m sure I didn’t help any of the pain it was going through, but the bird was very close to its end. The injuries were very substantial.
And sadly, after retrieving it a few hours later, it passed away
Another heartbreak

Trying to get things arranged to move, snowden our snowy owl into his summer hotel, which is air-conditioned
Preparing his enclosure I got a message about a barred owl near State Road 39 that was found hit on the side of the road badly injured
She was willing to meet me in Winamac
So off I went
As I was waiting for her, I got a call from another center called Hoosier wildlife
They are located near Noblesville, Indiana
The excitement I felt went through the roof
They actually made the venture all the way to Rochester, Indiana, and down the river to the very secluded area and found the barred owl that had been caught in fishing line the day before
I mean, what’s the chance of that? It is short of a miracle that’s for sure.

And thank you to Hoosier wildlife
For the rescue
It takes a village. It truly takes a village.
So the lady shows up with the injured barred Owl from State Road 39
And the kind people that rescued the fishing line barred Owl met me on my way home to transfer the owl
Am I blessed or what?
It’s been a whirlwind two days
I need lots of good vibes sent this direction for these amazing birds for survival
We can only hope and pray and do our diligence to help them pull through

For spreading the word about the fishing line, barred Owl
Everyone I’m over the moon
Now let’s send the vibes that he survives
He is getting hydrated. He’s had medication and he’s all wrapped up. I hope he pulls through as I hope the rest of the intakes due also.
