You don't even have to crane your neck to check out this ! A rare sight along the Long Island Sound watershed, sandhill cranes can occasionally be seen during migration periods. A huge thanks to Andrew Lyman, CT DEEP Seasonal Maintainer for catching these big birds up close at Dennis Hill State Park in Connecticut.

Celebrate Long Island Sound Coastal Resilience Month with us!

Join us on Long Island for the 4th annual Long Island Sound Coastal Resilience Forum on October 27 and a Coastal Resilience Field Trip Tour on October 28.

Hosted by New York Sea Grant in partnership with the Long Island Sound Partnership and the Nassau and Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation Districts, these events bring communities and partners together to connect, share ideas, and learn about coastal resilience work across the region.

Sound Fact: American eels really know how to go with the flow. Until they don't...

Their journey begins life thousands of miles from Long Island Sound in the Sargasso Sea. As tiny larvae, they drift with ocean currents toward the Atlantic coast. Those that reach the Sound transform into nearly transparent glass eels before before changing course and swimming upstream into rivers and streams.

And that's just the beginning. Over the course of their lives, they undergo several transformations, spend decades in the fresh waters of the Long Island Sound watershed, before heading back to the Sargasso Sea, where what happens next remains largely a mystery. Despite decades of research, no one has ever observed American eels spawning in the wild.

It’s SepticSmart Week!

What do septic systems have to do with Long Island Sound?

Outdated septic systems can release nitrogen into groundwater that eventually makes its way to bays, harbors, and Long Island Sound. Too much nitrogen can contribute to water quality problems, including low-oxygen conditions that affect marine life.

That’s why reducing nitrogen from onsite wastewater systems is an important part of efforts to improve Long Island Sound.

If you have a septic system, is a good reminder to know your system, maintain it properly and learn about upgrade programs that may be available in your community.

Nassau and Suffolk counties have programs that help homeowners replace outdated septic systems with newer, nitrogen-reducing technology. Funding may be available to help cover the cost.

Whether wastewater goes to a treatment plant or is treated right in your backyard, managing it well helps protect the waters we all share.
