That’s a wrap on the 2026 Long Island Sound Celebration Days!

Over the past two weeks, we celebrated the Sound in Connecticut and New York, with three family fun events with opportunities to get out on the water, explore the shoreline, try hands-on activities, learn about local wildlife, and experience the Sound from new perspectives.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Sherwood Island State Park, Oyster Bay, and Randalls Island, and to all of the partners, organizations, and volunteers who helped make these events possible.

We’re already looking forward to doing it again next year and continuing to bring people together to explore, enjoy and connect with Long Island Sound. We hope to see you there!

How can a hurricane hundreds of miles offshore affect water quality in Long Island Sound?

Last August, when Hurricane Erin passed offshore, its winds and waves mixed the Sound's waters, bringing oxygen rich surface water deeper into the water column. After the storm, hypoxic conditions we no longed detected at monitoring stations.

The event gave scientists a striking example of how weather and timing can shape hypoxia from year to year, even as long-term reductions in nitrogen pollution have improved conditions in the Sound.

2026 Long Island Sound wildlife stickers just dropped! We're excited to add TWO new stickers to the collection: the glass eel and eastern oyster.

Want one? They'll be up for grabs at our August anniversary celebrations, where you can also enjoy various activities along the Sound. Can't make it? No worries! We'll have them at our events throughout the rest of the year.

Celebrate Long Island Sound with us this August!

Join the Long Island Sound Partnership for three free Long Island Sound Celebration Days across the region. Whether you're in Connecticut, Long Island, or New York City, there's a chance to get outside, explore the Sound, and learn about the wildlife, habitats, and communities that make this estuary so special.

Spotted recently at Harkness Memorial State Park, least terns are one of the many coastal birds that depend on healthy Long Island Sound habitats. It is listed as a threatened species in both Connecticut and New York.

Least terns are the smallest tern species in North America and nest directly on open, sandy beaches, where their eggs and chicks are so well camouflaged that they're easy to miss.

Because they depend on healthy coastal habitats and abundant small fish, scientists monitor least tern nesting populations to help track the health of Long Island Sound's beaches and surrounding ecosystems. Their success tells us a great deal about the condition of the places they depend on and the wildlife that shares those habitats.

Harkness Memorial State Park is one of the Long Island Sound Partnership's Stewardship Areas, and sightings like this are a reminder of the important habitat these special places provide.

If you're visiting the beach this summer, watch for posted nesting areas and give coastal birds plenty of space. A little distance can make a big difference for these vulnerable birds.

It's Diamondback Terrapin Day at Hammonasset Beach State Park this Saturday!

Spend the day learning about these incredible animals and the salt marsh habitat they call home. If you're there, stop by the Long Island Sound Partnership and Connecticut Sea Grant tent to say hello and learn more about Long Island Sound!

Diamondback Terrapin Day is one of several Salt Marsh Days hosted by Audubon Connecticut and Meigs Point Nature Center throughout the summer. Each event offers another chance to discover the plants, animals, and habitats of the salt marsh.
