At our Centene Nursery, staff and kiddos lovingly refer to a corner of the floor as “Alizée’s Salon.” 💙❤️

Many children who return to the Nursery already know they want to sit in Alizée’s chair. She takes time to talk with parents about their child’s haircare routines, asks kiddos what styles they want, and helps them feel comfortable, included, and cared for throughout the process.

One staff member recently shared this story after watching Alizée braid a little boy’s hair:

“We had a bit of a rough start with the detangling — he even had to give me some of his mommy’s tips to make it hurt less!” Alizée said. “And he coached me through the braiding process letting me know how many braids he wanted on each side... just like his mommy does it.”

“The second he saw himself in the mirror, his whole face just lit up.”

Another staff member shared that afterward, he proudly walked around showing everyone his hair and “looked so proud.”

She also reflected on “the ways that she goes above and beyond to help our children feel safe, honored and beautiful.”

Moments like these are about so much more than hair. They are about trust, confidence, familiarity, dignity, and helping children feel seen and cared for in meaningful ways.

Thank you, Alizée, for the love and intentionality you bring to children every day. ✨

THEN & NOW: Building Stronger Families Through Community Leadership 💙❤️

As we celebrate 40 years of Keeping Kids Safe & Building Strong Families, we’re reflecting on the people and partnerships that have helped shape the Nursery’s growth and deepen our impact over the decades.

Between 1996 and 1998, the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery launched both our Advisory Board and Parent Advisory Board, two groups created with a shared belief that strong organizations are built through collaboration, lived experience, and community care.

For nearly three decades, Advisory Board members have helped strengthen the Nursery through leadership, advocacy, professional expertise, fundraising support, and meaningful community connections that continue to expand our reach and sustainability.

At the same time, our Parent Advisory Board created space for parents who have experienced Nursery services firsthand to help guide our work, share insight into the needs of families, support other parents, and ensure our programs remain grounded in compassion, dignity, and real community experience.

Together, these boards reflect something that has always been central to the Nursery’s mission: children and families are strongest when communities come together to listen, support, and lead alongside one another.

Thank you to every past and present member who has helped move this work forward over the last 40 years. 💫

Summer can bring both joy and added challenges for families as school schedules shift, childcare needs increase, grocery costs rise, and daily routines change. It is also an especially busy season across our Nurseries and Outreach Centers as we continue supporting children and families throughout the summer months.

Our summer wish list has been updated to help us prepare our spaces to welcome kiddos with comfort, care, play, and everyday essentials. Some of our most-needed items right now include:

☀️ Shorts & t-shirts for children of all ages (up to size 14–16)
☀️ Snacks
☀️ Suncreen
☀️ Clorox Wipes, paper plates, garbage bags
☀️ Bubbles & sidewalk chalk
☀️ Kinetic sand & sensory items

Community care is strongest when we work together, and every item donated helps us keep care ready for children and families this summer. 💙❤️ Check out our wish list here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3CLGL5ZDNY2SP?ref_=wl_share

Recently, Crisis Nursery staff from across our agency’s 16 locations came together for one of our quarterly All-Staff Meetings. This is a dedicated time for our full team to connect, learn together, and strengthen the care we provide to children and families every day.

Training topics included infant safe sleep practices presented by Flannery Harman of IFM Community Medicine; secondary traumatic stress and staff resilience led by Dana Patton, a licensed clinical social worker and the Nursery’s former Family Empowerment Director; and trauma-informed de-escalation strategies presented by our Crisis Nursery Healing Hearts therapists: Lisa Cholley, Jessica Holt, Lauren Hampp, and Allie Broaddus.

We are grateful for the compassion, expertise, and dedication our staff bring to this work each day. 💙❤️

As summer is set to begin, many families experience increased pressure around food access, childcare, household expenses, and disrupted routines. It is a season that can bring added strain for parents already working hard to provide for their families.

We are so grateful for Operation Food Search, whose work continues to provide critical support and nourishment for families across our community, including many of the children and caregivers our team walks alongside each day.

Their 45th Anniversary 45-Day Food Drive is now underway with a goal of collecting 45,000 pounds of food for local families.

Community care is strongest when we work together, and this is a meaningful opportunity to help ensure families have access to food and support this summer.

Did you know summer is historically one of the most challenging times for shelf-stable food supply at food banks — while many families are also facing increased food insecurity?

Today, we’re kicking off Operation Food Search’s 45th Anniversary Celebration and 45-Day Food Drive with one ambitious goal: collecting 45,000 pounds of food for local families.

Whether you organize a large food drive or donate a few shelf-stable items, every donation helps nourish our community.

One year ago, a tornado caused significant damage across St. Louis, and recovery is still ongoing for many families today.

While the storm affected multiple communities, the path to recovery has been uneven. Families in historically under-resourced areas of the region have often faced greater barriers to rebuilding, shaped by long-standing inequities in access to insurance, housing stability, and recovery supports.

For many, recovery has meant continued displacement, financial strain, and the slow work of rebuilding daily life long after the initial disaster.

We remain grateful to our partners at the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis and 4theVille for the care, advocacy, and action they brought to families in the immediate aftermath of the storm. We are also deeply thankful for our Family Empowerment Program social workers and counselors who continue walking alongside families as they work toward greater stability and healing.

Recovery is a shared responsibility, one that extends beyond the moment of crisis and into the long-term commitments we make to one another as a community.

This weekend, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is hosting a Weekend of Service supporting ongoing tornado recovery efforts across St. Louis. We are grateful for their continued leadership and encourage others to support these efforts however they are able.

Tomorrow is our largest community distribution ever.

As part of “One Year Later: A Weekend of Service,” the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis will provide food, toiletries and essential items to support a community still recovering from the 2025 tornado.
