Last month, Habitat Saint Louis was joined by a group of individual volunteers, a few homebuyers, and several members of St. John's United Church of Christ for a weekend build day! This team worked together to install flooring in a Habitat home in the Gate District. 😁

💭In 1986, in an old church basement, a group of volunteers started the Saint Louis affiliate of Habitat for Humanity and built their first two homes over two years.

⏩Fast forward to 2026, and both of those homes are still standing!

🏠Forty years and 450-plus houses later, Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis is a recognized regional leader in affordable and sustainable building practices. While we continue to rely heavily on volunteer labor to build homes, we also have an impressive staff of skilled professionals who ensure that each quality home we construct is built on time and within budget. Homeowners do their part as well, putting in 250 hours of sweat equity and committing to paying down a 30-year affordable mortgage.

🎉 In celebration of our 40th Anniversary, a generous anonymous donor has challenged us to sign up more donors for our monthly giving society – The Brick by Brick Club. From now until July 31st, our anonymous friend will match the first 6 installments of new memberships - dollar for dollar!

Amette, a Habitat Saint Louis homeowner since 2010, recently visited our admin office to share bread she had made from scratch. ❤

She informed us that this bread, Hembasha (H'mbasha, Ambasha), is a very popular bread in her home country of Eritrea, frequently made for celebrations, festive events, or simply as an offering of community. A typical Hembasha has cardamom, raisins, and black sesame seeds as flavorings, making it a pleasantly sweet and savory bread. ✨

During her visit, Amette had inquired about how many Habitat Saint Louis volunteers would be present on-site on Saturday, May 24, which is Independence Day in Eritrea. She wanted to bake bread for all volunteers to share on this day. 🥹

"Eritrea’s Independence Day is celebrated annually on 24 May, marking the day in 1991 when Eritrean liberation forces entered Asmara after a 30‑year armed struggle against Ethiopian rule. In 2026, the 35th anniversary will be especially significant, as the country reflects decades of sovereignty, sacrifice, and resilience." 💛

Back in April, Habitat Saint Louis took Smith NMTC Associates on a walking tour of homes made possible through New Markets Tax Credits (NMTCs). Since 1987, Habitat Saint Louis has built or rehabbed 450+ homes and created 131 homeownership opportunities with the support of NMTCs! 💛

A couple weeks ago, following a last-minute relocation due to our area's taunting and temperamental weather patterns, Ameren Missouri gathered in the parking lot of our administrative office to assemble walls for future Habitat Saint Louis homes. 🛠

Have you seen the new amenities in the Dutchtown Community Garden? ✨

The folks at Dutchtown Community Improvement District graciously sponsored the park benches and trash bins you see here. Our amazing Habitat Saint Louis construction team helped deliver the furniture after it was assembled by our lovely Habitat Saint Louis construction volunteers! Volunteers from Youth Works Chillicothe United Methodist working at the garden helped unload and get the furniture comfortably situated in the park. 🌳

Dutchtown Common, a pocket park on Virginia that is also home to the VAL Community Garden, is maintained by the neighborhood group Dutchtown Main Streets.

In all, this project involved collaboration between four community organizations, three local and one from Chillicothe, Ohio - a cross-community story sure to make your heart feel good! 💛

Be sure to check out Dutchtown Common, located between Virginia Ave., Alabama Ave., and Liberty St.! 😁
