The organization was originally established as the **“Daughters of Erin”** and later became known as the **Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.**

For more than 130 years, generations of Hibernian women have carried forward the values we still share today:

🥃 WHISKEY WEDNESDAY 🇺🇸

Friday is September 11.

For so many of us, that date is more than a square on the calendar. We remember exactly where we were. We remember the images. We remember the fear, the heartbreak — and the incredible courage and unity that followed.

And we remember that the story didn’t end on September 11, 2001.

For the next 20 years, young men and women raised their hands and volunteered to serve our country.

One of them was Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz, a young Marine from our own St. Louis community.

Jared was only 20 years old when he was killed at Abbey Gate in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 26, 2021 — one of the 13 American service members who lost their lives that day.

His family made sure his story didn't end there.

🇺🇸 The Freedom 13 was created in Jared’s memory to honor his sacrifice and carry his legacy forward by supporting veterans and helping others.

That is why our Whiskey Pull at Shadows of Éire means so much to us.

☘️ **MYTHOLOGY MONDAY: THE PÚCA** ☘️

Not every creature in Irish folklore is easily labeled **good or evil** — and few prove that better than the mysterious **Púca**. 👀

The **Púca** (*pooka*, from the Irish **púca**) is one of Ireland’s most famous supernatural beings: a **shape-shifter, trickster, and bringer of both good and bad fortune**.

Depending on the tale — and perhaps the Púca’s mood — it might appear as a **great black horse with glowing eyes**, a goat, dog, hare, or even a strange human figure with animal-like features.

One of its favorite tricks?

🐎 **Offering unsuspecting travelers a ride.**

Climb aboard, and you might find yourself racing wildly through the Irish countryside in the dead of night before being dumped unceremoniously back where you started… assuming the Púca was feeling generous.

But the Púca wasn’t always feared. In some traditions, it could offer **warnings, prophecies, or even helpful advice**. Like many beings of Irish folklore, it existed somewhere between the human world and the mysterious **Otherworld** — unpredictable, powerful, and deserving of respect.

The Púca also has strong associations with **Samhain**, when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld was believed to grow thin. Traditionally, crops left in the fields after Samhain could be considered **“Púca’s share”** and were no longer to be eaten.

So if you're wandering an Irish country road after dark and a magnificent black horse appears seemingly out of nowhere...

Maybe don't accept the ride. 😉🐎🌙
