The Southampton Naturescapes support a variety of wildlife including visiting birds of prey such as this Red Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis). These hawks help to control small mammal populations such as mice and squirrel, limit the spread of disease, act as a sign of a healthy environment, and balance food webs.

A bit of interesting movie trivia: The scream of a Red Tailed Hawks is frequently dubbed over footage of Bald Eagles in movies and television. Bald eagles make high-pitched chirps, squeals, and whistles, so Hollywood sound editors use the more aggressive hawk sound to match the eagle's majestic visual image.

Visit the Southampton wedges and sit a while to see what wildlife you can observe! Also, all are welcome to help our volunteers who manage the wedges meeting the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9am-12pm at Marie’s Wedge (January, Itaska, and Wherry). One of my jobs is to advocate on your behalf when the City fails to provide a service you deserve. Typical advocacy involves working with City departments to correct outstanding requests to trim and remove sidewalk trees, following up on missed refuse service, addressing problem streets, sidewalks, and properties, and working with our police partners on a wide variety of issues.

I need your help to ensure a prompt and efficient resolution of your problem. First, contact the Citizens Service Bureau to make a service request. When you do so, specifically state your concern. Be prepared to identify the specific service you want, the address where the concern exists and, if possible, upload a photograph showing the issue. The old saying suggesting "a photograph is worth a 1,000 words" is absolutely true. Once done, you'll get a Request No. and, if you make an online request, an email receipt.

CSB will provide you with a date by which your concern will be addressed. If you don't see action by that date, provide me with the Request No. That number ensures my office follows up on the request you made. Your efforts also provide essential documentation for holding City departments accountable. After all, the City cannot resolve an issue it doesn't know about.

My partners in this role are our Neighborhood Improvement Specialists. Justin Rohloff serves as the NIS for the Hill and Southwest Garden neighborhoods. Shanieka Jackson serves North Hampton and Southampton. NISs are resident advocates, charged with the responsibility to educate you and help you work through your issue. Justin and Shanieka are excellent references.

Alan Jankowski Commissioner of Forestry generously donated his time on Sat July 18 to train 12 SoHa residents in the proper way to trim small tree branches growing on city property (the space between the sidewalk and street) that are in the sidewalk sight lines. Jankowski will provide cards to those trained, to verify participation and an app used by the forestry dept., In which we can log trees that have been trimmed.

If you are a neighborhood walker, beware of brushing against overgrowth on sidewalks or strolling through paths in neighborhood gardens. Ticks are also living in the city.

Staying tick aware is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family.

UPDATE: The July 22 meeting is at Metro High School, located at 4015 McPherson.

As many of you know, St. Louis Public Schools is now studying the future operation of our public schools. Along that line, I've received a handful of inquiries about Buder Elementary in the Southampton Neighborhood. SLPS has developed three potential models addressing school operations. Buder is open in Models A and B. It’s closed in Model C.

There are two upcoming community meetings:
* Wednesday, July 15 at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School from 5-7 p.m. and
* Wednesday, July 22 at Metro High School from 5-7 p.m.
