“I learned about tolerance and how to work under pressure (in certain instances). I enjoyed the sense of community and camaraderie. Everything seemed fine to me—though I do wonder: why aren’t printed materials provided? Also, what is your email address? I was able to discover the positive side of most of the participants, and I now consider them part of my circle of friends—just as the knowledge I gained has become part of my personal cultural repertoire.”

In the communities where we share the tools of Transforming Power—where the darkness of violence tries to extinguish joy—a light emerges from the hearts of children. Through our Alternatives to Violence and Power of Goodness workshops, we have seen how a simple story has the strength to transform reality. It’s not just about telling a story; it’s about planting seeds of change.

Among the women in the prison, a noticeable shift in behavior has been observed. One of them shares that she is no longer as impulsive as she used to be—that she now thinks before she acts and wishes to help others just as she herself has been helped. Below, we share her testimony:

"I learned how to listen. I’m going to put what I learned about communication into practice. I liked the communication circles because I learned from others—someone mentioned that they admire their dad because he’s a hard worker. I liked that because it was a beautiful sentiment. I also learned not to be violent."- AVP Participant

Through her commitment and dedication, she shows great promise as a facilitator-in-training—one who will help expand our currently very small existing team of facilitators.

Through our mini-workshops, participants have discovered they are not alone. When families come together, the AVP principles stop being just ideas and become real tools for survival and change. For example, they learn to recognize their own worth despite having so little, they break the cycle of reacting in anger to protect the peace at home, and they keep the faith that a different kind of life is possible.

On the eve of the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Peace Accords in El Salvador – January 16, 1992 – we share some testimonials from children and teens who participated in the Power of Goodness Program in our country: In the story "Experiment in Fairness," I learned that we must avoid mistreating people of different skin colors.
