We had at least 30 sparrows, 6 doves, 10 squirrels, and 4 hummingbirds in the yard this morning. No hawk, no rat.

Today.

Two in one day. At noon, the rat from up the street came running into our back yard. This in and of itself is unusual. Then it ran into the back flower garden instead of grabbing food from the ground by a feeder. Only then did my spouse Betty and I see a large shadow fly back and forth over our yard. The Cooper's hawk was hunting it. The little birds also disappeared, coming back out at about 2 pm.

Already a good birding day - I was greeted in the back yard this morning by a lark sparrow and a red crossbill, a Nelson's sharp tailed sparrow and a broad tailed hummingbird.

I saw a black chinned hummingbird at our feeder today...it must be a tourist.

3 unusual birds today....
A hummingbird the size of a medium sparrow,
A hummingbird that was normal size but all black and green - no white on it anywhere, and it flew 3 feet from my face,
and
a lark sparrow!

Another great day for bird watching, this time in quality instead of quantity. 15 minutes of flight aerobatics between up to 4 ruby throated, 2 broad tailed, and a rufous hummingbirds at one time around the feeder. I was standing very still 12' away, the rufous buzzed within 3' of my face. At 6:30, I went out for last feed. The Cooper's hawk was on the electric line and dropped down onto the fence. It flew 25' down the fence and missed a half attack on a squirrel then sat for 5 minutes before flying off.

Bird varieties in the yard yesterday - 3 types of hummingbirds(Ruby throated, Broad-tailed, Rufous), 8 types of sparrows(Chipping, American tree, Field, Grasshopper, Savannah, Song, Vesper, Le Conte's), 3 types of finches(Purple, house, American Goldfinch), Pine Siskin, Common Redpoll, 2 types of cardinals(northern and desert), a Red winged blackbird, Mourning doves, a blue jay, Common grackles, and a Cooper's Hawk just after 5 P.M.

Today has been an unusual birdwatching day... A sparrow got stuck in our windowsill. I thought it was dead at first, but I saw a little cloud of v***r appearing and disappearing on the outside of the kitchen window. I got my leather glove on, and slowly went to it, talking quietly. I lifted its claw off the sill it was stuck in, then lifted it a little higher and it moved its other claw onto the glove. It stood on the glove for a second like it was trying to figure out why it wasn't dead. Then it flew off. Also, I saw 2 hummingbirds circling each other in the back flower garden. One of them had a dark green stomach.

A Black Backed Woodpecker was in our back yard this morning!

It's been a while since I was here. We had a black backed woodpecker in the backyard yesterday. The goldfinches are going nuts for the sunflowers in the yard. It's hot outside - stay well!

I haven't been on in a while - sorry. We had a mother downy woodpecker and 2 chicks on the snag several days in a row last week. I watched them for about 20 minutes each time out front. She brought them to the back yard for some suet.
