World Eye Cancer Hope

World Eye Cancer Hope Life and sight for every child. DONATE TODAY: https://wechope.org/give-hope/donate/ Retinoblastoma is highly curable. Local sustainability is our long term goal.

Retinoblastoma is an aggressive childhood eye cancer. 95% of children develop tumours before 3 years of age. The most common early sign is a white pupil seen in flash photos and dim light. More than 96% of children survive in the developed world, but many lose one or both eyes and precious sight due to late diagnosis and sub-optimal care. More than 90% of affected children live in developing coun

tries where access to specialist care is limited at best. 4 in 5 of these precious children die, but their suffering and loss is entirely preventable. In both developed and developing countries, children’s lives and sight will be saved by increasing awareness, access to existing treatments and compassionate family support. We C Hope for all children with retinoblastoma – we are committed to bringing the promise of life and sight to every child, and ending needless suffering from this cancer. In developing countries, we aim to close the vast survival gap by building local capacity to provide world-class care in a resource-limited setting. Simple changes, small investment and dedicated vision can make a radical and lasting difference to the lives of our world's youngest and most vulnerable cancer warriors, and to their families.

In Rio, was on the world stage.

At International Society of Ocular Oncology - ISOO's ISOO 2026, members of the global Rb community came together for several days of research, learning, collaboration, and connection. Medical professionals, advocates, survivors, and families shared ideas and experiences that all point toward the same goal: better care and brighter hope for children with retinoblastoma.

For us at World Eye Cancer Hope, it was also a beautiful reminder of what happens when this community comes together.

The conversations that began in Rio will continue this September at One Retinoblastoma World 2026 in San Antonio, where families, survivors, doctors, researchers, Child Life specialists, and advocates will gather to learn from one another and strengthen the support surrounding every child and family affected by Rb.

We hope you’ll join us.

A bright “eye shine” in a pet photo can be completely normal. In a young child, a white glow in the pupil needs checking.

In this short video, Mike Rhodes, a veterinary ophthalmologist at Focus Referrals, explains why.

Dogs and cats have something called a tapetum lucidum, a reflective layer behind the retina that helps them see in the dark. That reflection is why their eyes may glow brightly in photos or low light.

Children do not have that same reflective layer. If you notice a white glow in a child’s eye, especially in flash photos or dim light, it may be a sign of an eye condition, including , and should be checked promptly by an appropriate medical professional.

Thank you to Mike and the team at Focus Referrals for helping us share this simple, memorable explanation.

Early detection awareness can start anywhere, even with a comparison to the pets we love. 👁️ 🐕 🐈

When people from around the world come together for children with retinoblastoma, powerful things happen.

At ISOO Rio 2026, hosted by the International Society of Ocular Oncology - ISOO, World Eye Cancer Hope had the chance to learn from doctors, researchers, advocates, Child Life professionals, and families who are all working toward better care, earlier diagnosis, and stronger support for children with Rb.

From new research to global treatment access to the importance of helping children feel safe through care, the conference was full of conversations that matter deeply to our community.

In this new blog, we share highlights and reflections from Rio, and looking ahead to continuing this work at One Retinoblastoma World 2026 in San Antonio this September.

Eye cancer experts unite at the 2026 International Society of Ocular Oncology conference in Rio for community, collaboration, and progress.

Today marks the final day of World Retinoblastoma Week, but this is the kind of awareness we hope families carry with them all year long.

One of the most important “quick checks” in pediatric eye health takes only seconds.

It’s called the fundal reflex, often referred to as the red reflex, exam. In a darkened room, a clinician uses an ophthalmoscope to look for a normal light reflex from the back of each eye.

If you ever notice a white glow in photos or dim light, a turned eye, or anything about your child’s eyes that feels “off,” trust that instinct and ask for a prompt fundal reflex eye exam.

This short video is the most-watched on our YouTube channel for a reason: it’s simple, memorable, and worth sharing with every parent, caregiver, and pediatric provider you know.

World Rb Week may be ending, but early detection awareness never stops.

Save and share. You never know who this could help. 👁️✨
