Today is a day of celebration for me but for a different reason.

Today is my dad’s birthday! 🎉

He’s a true Fourth of July baby, and I’m grateful to celebrate another year of his life.

For many, today is Independence Day.

We all have the freedom to celebrate what holds meaning for us. As an African American woman, however, my perspective is different.

While the United States declared independence in 1776, people who look like me did not experience freedom in the same way. For our community, that journey to freedom came much later 161 years ago, not 250.

History offers several answers to the question of when freedom truly came for enslaved African Americans.

Historians often point to three significant dates:
• January 1, 1863 – Emancipation Day
• June 19, 1865 – Juneteenth
• December 6, 1865 – Ratification of the 13th Amendment

For me, I choose to honor June 19, 1865 Juneteenth because it represents the day freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Texas and has become a lasting symbol of liberation, resilience, and hope.

Whatever you choose to celebrate today, take a moment to understand your why. Knowledge gives meaning to our traditions.

Today, we closed out JuneteenthSTL with the unveiling of the first installment of the Bridge the Gap314 Permanent Walking Museum at RR Marketplace. On this Father’s Day, we proudly revealed “Walking Out of Slavery into Freedom,” a powerful installation that honors the journey, resilience, and legacy of those who came before us.

This historic installation is the first of its kind in the State of Missouri, and we are excited to share more about the artist, the vision, and the significance behind this meaningful work in the days ahead.
