The Missouri Chapter of the Sierra Club has made the following endorsements for the Nov. 3 election: YES on Amendment 6 and NO on Amendment 3 and Proposition A.

Here is further information from the Missouri Chapter's Political Committee:

Amendment 3, Prohibit Abortion and Gender Transition Procedures for Minors Amendment. MO Sierra Club endorses voting NO on Amendment 3. The Sierra Club supports reproductive rights and health care availability. Amendment 3 severely restricts abortion and would end transition care for minors.

Amendment 6, Initiative and Referendum Powers and Legislative Change Amendment. MO Sierra Club endorses voting YES on Amendment 6. For too long the Missouri Legislature has repealed or amended citizen Initiative Petitions (IP) passed by a majority of voters. Amendment 6 requires a legislative high bar (80%) for the legislature itself to seek changes via the ballot to amend prior successful citizen initiatives. Amendment 6 also protects the IP process itself and seeks review for ballot summaries. The Sierra Club supports IPs as a valued part of our state's democracy. Amendment 6 seeks greater protection and legitimacy for that process.

Proposition A, Congressional Map Referendum. Everything about Missouri's Congressional District maps has been confusing this year! But Proposition A simply asks Missouri Citizens if they want to implement the "new 2025 legislative map" or not. The MO Sierra Club endorses voting NO on Proposition A. That "new " map was passed by the Republican-controlled legislature with the explicit aim of redistricting out an historically Democratic district in Kansas City and replacing it with a Republican-leaning district. This re-mapping was done outside the usual 10-year Census timeline for redistricting. The Republican stated goal is to defeat one of Missouri's two Democratic Representatives. If Proposition A fails, the state will continue to use the existing map which was configured in 2022 after the 2020 census. It's important to defeat Prop. A.

Because we were only able to deploy six of our ten Blu+ radio tags in Boonville on 9/20, we’re waiting until next week to deploy four more. We’ll work with students and faculty at Central Missouri University in Warrensburg to tag them—another central Missouri location.

Our first six monarchs are on the move—most in the lakes area last night!
Data so far again shows fewer migrating through Missouri—preferring Kansas and Illinois. So, more data from central Missouri may be valuable.

Join in a fun family event at George Owens Nature Park (Independence) on Sunday, Sept. 27th, catching monarch butterflies and applying a tag on the wing to identify when found on their way to Michoacán, Mexico.
The nature center has nets, and we’ll have Monarch Watch tags.
We’ll also use our phones to locate monarchs with radio-tags that may be flying nearby, using the Project Monarch app.
We’ll start at 2pm, ending at 4pm.

We’re deploying ten of the solar-powered radio tags on monarchs in Boonville, MO on Sunday, Sept. 20th, 10am-4pm!
We hope these tags in central Missouri may provide information on how monarchs fare in flight from central Missouri.
We’re partnering with Monarch Watch and the Missouri Conservation Corps. Volunteers will use nets to catch at least 30 monarch butterflies, that will be examined for size, s*x, and absence of OE parasite—and the ten best specimens will receive the radio-tags, according to a carefully prepared protocol.

Did you know that the monarch butterfly migration to Michoacán Mexico has decreased by 80% since the 1990’s? Separate data sources show Missouri as a “desert” for monarch migration.

To better study the success of monarchs migrating from central Missouri, we’ve initiated a pilot project to use ten of the new tiny solar-powered transmitters. Our order will arrive in time for the September migration in Missouri.
