A little of summer is lingering at Compass Rose. ☀️🍂

On this unseasonably warm October day, the goats have turned their playground into a shady lounge. The ramps and platforms, usually made for romping, are just as good for resting—and today, nobody seems to be in much of a hurry.

Across the farm, we’re all savoring these warm, gentle days before winter comes. Summer’s lingering goodbye, enjoyed in very good company. 💚

Every sanctuary needs a security system. Ours just happens to be 12 pounds of bark, zero enforcement power, and a firm belief that he is VERY important 😂🐾

Yesterday we had so much fun welcoming students from Mr. Hamilton's construction classes at Owen Valley High School to meet the sanctuary residents they've been building for. Mr. Hamilton and his amazing students have partnered with Compass Rose to create feeders for our pigs and goats. Twelve were delivered yesterday, and thirteen more are in production. We -- and more importantly the animals -- are absolutely delighted with their work!

The animals handled quality control, and I'm happy to report that the feeders passed every test, including being walked on by some portly pigs and serving as platforms for the type of king-of-the-mountain contests that goats are known for.

We loved introducing the students to the animals who will benefit from their work, and we look forward to having them back. Thank you to Mr. Hamilton and his students for the time, skill, and care they put into this project. We are so grateful!

We’re so grateful to the Chamber for this beautiful video and for recognizing Compass Rose as 2026 Nonprofit of the Year. It was a joy to share last night with so many of the people who make the sanctuary possible. Thank you for believing in our work. 💚

Nothing goes to waste here, including cantaloupe seeds… 🍈

The pigs got to feast on some last year, nature handled the rest 💩 and now Freeda gets to enjoy the consequences. Don’t worry, we won’t spill the beans and spoil her appetite 😋😂

We have two geese at Compass Rose: Goose and GooseGoose. (Yes, those are really their names.)

And while both have important opinions about pretty much everything that happens on the farm, GooseGoose seems to have found his particular calling: chickens.

Somewhere along the way, he appointed himself their guardian. He trots around the farm with his little flock, keeps careful track of where everyone is, and makes sure that anyone who gets too close—including me—knows that he is there and paying attention.

He isn’t aggressive. He just stands his ground and honks, quite certain that whatever I am doing requires supervision.

I never knew I could love a goose so much.

There is something absolutely delightful about watching GooseGoose take his responsibilities so seriously. He has chickens to protect, a farm to keep an eye on, and apparently all of us to supervise.

It’s a big job.

Fortunately, GooseGoose has got it. 🪿💚
