At the Olduvai Gorge in Northern Tanzania near the Ngorongoro Conservation and National Park is the site where the renowned archaeologist Mary Leakey and her husband anthropologist Louis B. Leakey (with the invaluable and uncredited assistance of the Maasai workers) unearthed in 1959 the human skull they dated to be 1.8 million years old. In 1972 their son, Richard Leakey,- also with the assistance of his African workers- unearthed the human bone fragments that dated back to 2.5 millions years. A few years later in Ethiopia paleoanthropologists unearthed the near complete skeleton of the woman they named Lucy who walked upright some 3.5 million years ago. Without a doubt Africa is the root and cradle of all civilization. This should be one of the compelling reasons why we as African Americans must work together more spiritually, culturally, educationally and economically to achieve operational unity i.e. unity of thought while accepting diversity of approaches. Our unity is one of the best ways we will be able to restore our people to their traditional greatness, power, and more importantly solve problems and challenges unique to our families, communities and within the African world.
