In a perfect world all clean stream pickups would be as easy as ours was today! Nice day, beautiful stream, very little trash (not any plastic bags, straws, or styrofoam- can you even believe it?!) MOGreenFuture volunteers at St. Peters Clean Stream with a truck and driver provided to watch over us and take away our trash. I’m sure our stream was one of the exceptions but one can hope and dream of less trash and more clean streams!

Every drop counts!! 💧💚💧

Did you know? Nearly 60% of your household water footprint can go toward lawn and garden maintenance!

Here are some easy ways to conserve water outdoors:

- Choose drought-tolerant plants
- Avoid overwatering your lawn
- Water in the early morning or late evening
- Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways

Every drop counts—let’s use water wisely! 💦

Think differently. Think sustainably.

Not all plastic is recyclable. Never place polystyrene foam items in your curbside or traditional drop-off recycling. Look for special collection sites. Reuse when possible. Avoid use by bringing your own reusable takeout or refillable container. Ask for compostable packaging - the cost has been getting closer to foam.

Turns out “stewardship” has a lot in common with “sustainability”! Today’s summit had great speakers with info on the importance of natives, managed landscapes, model ordinances and a bunch of “green” sustainable stewardship happening right here in our area! Call to action to support and encourage the control of invasive plant species on state public rights of ways and to foster change in your own community! So glad I didn’t miss this! Thank you and Cool Cities STL for hosting!!💚

Excellent, post below!!!
The best way to extend the function of Missouri's remaining landfills- refuse, rethinK, rot (compost), repair, refurbish, reuse, resale, reduce,
and recycle right!

MYTH vs. FACT: LANDFILLS & WASTE

❌ MYTH: Landfills are basically giant compost piles.
✅ FACT: Landfills are designed to store waste — not break it down.

❌ MYTH: Trash decomposes quickly once it’s buried.
✅ FACT: In landfills, waste breaks down very slowly in a sealed, oxygen-free environment.

❌ MYTH: Biodegradable bags and food waste will decompose in the trash.
✅ FACT: Without oxygen, space, and active microorganisms, even compostable materials don’t properly break down in landfills.

❌ MYTH: Landfills are harmless once waste is buried.
✅ FACT: Oxygen-free decomposition produces methane gas — a flammable, dangerous gas and a powerful contributor to climate change.

👉 BOTTOM LINE:
Recycling and composting keep valuable materials out of landfills, reduce methane, and protect our environment.

Celebrated MLK Day by attending a Project Learning Tree Workshop at the Waste Connections Sustainability Campus. Fun hands-on experience on engaging K-8 in environmental education…even in the freezing cold it was fun getting out there looking for life under a log and loved the project display board on plastics from an up and coming student environmentalist!
