StL Chloride

StL Chloride Stream Team volunteers collect data and educate the public about the dangers of chloride to streams. Post any uncovered salt piles and high readings.

The most important source of chloride pollution in streams in the St. Louis region is road salt. Winter chloride concentrations are often higher than EPA limits for protection of aquatic life: 230 mg/l chronic, 860 mg/l acute. Volunteers with the Missouri Stream Team have been monitoring streams in the area in order to help the general public, land managers, municipal leaders, and regulators understand the scope of the problem.
