ABB is an internationally recognized, CMS-approved, not-for-profit certifying board under the CLIA program. It evaluates individuals based on their education, experience, and knowledge of the laboratory field, and certifies those who meet its requirements for clinical laboratory directors, consultants, and supervisors.

Established by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) in 1968, ABB has grown alongside the profession. Its certifications now include:

High-Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD)
Embryology Laboratory Director (ELD)
Andrology Laboratory Director (ALD)
Public Health Laboratory Director (PHLD)

Announcing the Carleen Van Siclen Scholarship Fund

AAB is proud to announce the Carleen Van Siclen Scholarship Fund established in honor of the late Carleen Van Siclen who passed away on September 11, 2025, after a courageous battle with ALS. Carleen was 62 years old.

Carleen's life was one of strength, commitment, faith, and lasting impact. Her legacy lives on not only in her family but in the countless students and colleagues whose lives she touched through her work in the field of medical laboratory science education.

ABB Examination Scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026, in Baltimore, Maryland

ABB examinations are scheduled on Saturday, October 24, 2026, in conjunction with ASRM’s 2026 Scientific Congress & Expo. The examinations will be given at the Baltimore Hilton Inner Harbor Hotel, 401 West Pratt Street, Baltimore, Maryland, (443)830-8025.

A minimum of at least ten weeks is required to process completed applications. August 14, 2026, is the deadline for submitting applications, and all required documents, for the October 24, 2026, examinations.
Please submit your application well in advance of the August 14, 2026, deadline to allow time to receive all necessary documents, including educational transcripts and employment verification letters. If approved, the deadline to sign up for the October 24, 2025, examinations is September 11, 2026.

The Strategy for Summer 2026 Influenza Surveillance has been published and emphasizes that surveillance for seasonal influenza viruses and monitoring for novel influenza A virus infections, including Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5), remain critical during the summer months. The strategy includes continued influenza testing, preferably by RT-PCR, for persons with compatible illness, especially those with relevant animal or raw animal product exposures and severely ill hospitalized patients.

Because influenza A(H5) testing should only be performed when clinical, epidemiologic, or public health response criteria are met, laboratories should follow the recommended diagnostic testing algorithm and avoid unnecessary or out-of-sequence subtyping. Deviations from recommended workflows may increase the likelihood of false-positive results and unnecessary public health investigations and response activities.

For any positive or inconclusive influenza A(H5) result or a result indicating a novel influenza virus, please immediately notify respective State Public Health Departments. Specimens will most likely be requested by the State Public Health Laboratory or CDC for additional testing and virologic characterization.

Maintaining adherence to recommended influenza testing practices remains critical to supporting routine influenza surveillance, early detection of novel influenza cases and public health response activities.
