🍈 Cantaloupe season understood the assignment! 😍🌱

There’s nothing like walking into the farm and finding these beauties ready for harvest!

Farm Fact: Cantaloupes love the heat, but they also require patience. Most varieties take around 70–100 days from planting to harvest. One of the best signs they’re ready? A ripe cantaloupe will often “slip” right off the vine with very little effort. 🙌🏾

🌸🌻 The farm is BLOOMING beautifully this season! 😍

From zinnias to sunflowers, these gorgeous blooms are doing more than adding color to the farm and I already can’t wait to see how they come together for our Harvest Elegance gala centerpieces!

🐝 Farm Fact: We intentionally plant flowers throughout our farms because they attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. Those pollinators help our tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons, cucumbers and other crops produce food.

So when you see flowers growing between the vegetables, they aren’t just there to be pretty. 🌼 They’re part of the farm’s ecosystem and eventually, some of these beauties will make their way from farm to centerpiece. 💐

🫑 PEPPER PRODUCTION IS IN FULL SWING! 🌱

When pepper plants are happy, they will KEEP producing. This basket is proof! 🙌🏾

A few tips to keep your pepper harvest coming:

☀️ Give them plenty of sun: Peppers perform best with 6–8+ hours of direct sunlight.

💧 Water consistently: Deep, regular watering helps prevent stress, blossom drop and poor fruit development. Try to keep the soil evenly moist instead of letting it constantly swing from bone dry to soaking wet.

🌱 Feed the fruit, not just the leaves: Once plants begin flowering and producing peppers, avoid overdoing high-nitrogen fertilizer. Too much nitrogen can give you a beautiful leafy plant with fewer peppers.

🫑 HARVEST OFTEN! This is a big one. Picking mature peppers encourages the plant to keep flowering and producing more fruit. You don’t always have to wait for peppers to change color, they can often be harvested green or left longer to fully ripen, depending on the variety and how you plan to use them.

🌾 Mulch helps: A layer of straw or other clean mulch helps hold moisture, suppress weeds and protect the soil during hot summer weather.

And don’t count those pepper plants out just because fall is coming! As long as the weather stays warm, healthy plants can continue producing until cold temperatures and frost finally shut them down.

Keep picking so they keep producing! 🫑🌶️🌱

As you switch your garden over to fall crops, don’t leave those empty spaces uncovered. Cover them with straw until you’re ready to plant. Weeds grow when we give them exactly what they need—sunlight, water, and open soil. Take away the opportunity, and you’ll have a lot less weeding to do later.

We hear everyone saying, “Get cameras and put up a fence!” Trust us, we agree! 😂💚

Security cameras and proper fencing are definitely on our wish list, but protecting multiple urban farm locations comes with a significant cost.

Now that I have everybody’s attention 🤗🌱

Let’s see if the POSITIVE can get shared as much as the drama did!

If you’re new here, welcome to City Blossoms Inc. Urban Farms. 💚

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that believes every community deserves access to fresh, pesticide-free produce, regardless of income or ZIP code.

🌱 We operate 3 private urban farms. 2 in St. Louis City and 1 in St. Louis County.

🥬 We grow and give away fresh produce to local families and seniors.

👩🏾‍🌾 We teach people how to grow their own food and provide hands-on gardening and farming education.

🧑🏾‍🌾 We work with youth and young adults, teaching agriculture, nutrition, responsibility and the value of growing food.

🌻 We transform vacant and underused spaces into beautiful, productive urban farms that give back to the neighborhoods around them.

🍅 And we don’t stop at growing. We teach people how to harvest, prepare and preserve food so those skills can continue at home.

And just to be clear because we’re often mistaken for community gardens. Our locations are privately operated urban farms. We grow with a purpose: to educate, increase access to fresh food and invest back into our communities.
