Scripture says that “a faithful friend is a sturdy shelter” and “a treasure beyond price.” — Sirach 6:14–15 (RSV-CE)

The Catholic faith teaches that friendship is not only social, but spiritual. The people we surround ourselves with slowly influence the direction of our lives, our habits, our character, and even our relationship with God.

Good friendships encourage virtue. They challenge us to grow. They remind us of truth during difficult seasons. They help carry us closer to Christ instead of further from Him.

This is exactly why ASJB College Nights exist.

College Nights are free events for rising freshmen and transfer students to meet local Catholic students, build authentic community, and prepare spiritually before stepping onto campus this fall.

Growth in virtue requires humility. Pride says, “That’s just the way I am.” Virtue says, “With God’s grace, I can become better.”

College will challenge your habits, discipline, friendships, faith, and character. But holiness is formed when we are willing to acknowledge our weaknesses and allow God to transform them little by little.

Saint John Bosco constantly encouraged young people to pursue virtue through daily consistency, prayer, discipline, and humility.

Growth begins the moment we stop excusing our weaknesses and start surrendering them to God.

Saint John Bosco understood something many young people are still searching for today: purpose.

College is not only about earning a degree or building a career. It is also a season where souls are formed, convictions are tested, and future leaders of the Church are shaped.

That is why ASJB exists.

From College Nights and mentorship programs to scholarships and campus evangelization initiatives, ASJB is dedicated to helping students remain steadfast in their faith, grow in virtue, and lead others to Christ in the middle of college life.

St. John Bosco devoted his life to guiding young people toward holiness, joy, and authentic Catholic community. ASJB continues that mission today by helping students realize that faith is not meant to stay hidden — it is meant to transform campuses, friendships, futures, and lives for the glory of God.

St. John Bosco, pray for us.

As you grow older, strength starts looking like late night prayers, quiet moments at Mass, sitting before the Eucharist, and remembering that God is still with you through every new season of life.

College brings new experiences, friendships, opportunities, and challenges, but the Catholic faith reminds us that we never walk through them alone.

Christ remains our peace, strength, and foundation no matter where life takes us.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (RSV-CE)

I never truly understood what it meant to sin against God until I heard this:

Sin is often an attempt to be happy apart from God.

The world constantly promises happiness through temporary things:
approval, parties, success, relationships, achievements, popularity, or comfort. Yet none of those things were ever meant to replace God.

The Catholic faith teaches that we were created for communion with Him. That is why even after getting everything the world says should satisfy us, the soul can still feel restless.

Living in virtue means learning to choose what leads us closer to God instead of what only gives temporary satisfaction.

This does not mean becoming perfect overnight. It means choosing holiness daily:
remaining disciplined in prayer, avoiding what pulls us away from God, staying close to the sacraments, and pursuing what forms the soul instead of feeding every impulse.

“Only religion and virtue can bring us true happiness.” Saint John Bosco

The world constantly tells young people to measure their worth by popularity, appearance, achievements, followers, relationships, or success.

But the Catholic faith teaches something radically different: your worth was already given to you by God.

You are not valuable because of what the world says about you. You are valuable because you were created intentionally, loved deeply by Christ, and called to holiness.

Saint John Bosco understood how important it was for young people not only to be loved, but to know they are loved.

“It is not enough to love the young; they must know that they are loved.”

That same truth applies today. God does not see you as a number, achievement, or comparison. He sees you as His beloved son or daughter.

“For you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” — Isaiah 43:4 (RSV-CE)

One of the most beautiful parts of the Catholic faith is that we are invited to encounter God in every season of life, not only when life feels perfect.

This is why as Catholics we must develop the habit of prayer throughout the day.
Thanking God before meals, praying before exams, visiting the chapel during difficult seasons, offering struggles to Christ, or ending the night with gratitude and reflection.

Sometimes you just have to stay silent and pray because no words can fully explain what is going on in your mind.

There are moments when stress, anxiety, confusion, or exhaustion feel too heavy to explain to other people. Yet God understands even the prayers we struggle to put into words.

Saint John Bosco once said: “Never neglect prayer, for prayer is our greatest strength.”

Prayer is not only about having the perfect words. Sometimes prayer is simply sitting with God honestly and allowing Him into the middle of what you are carrying.

If you’re heading off to college this fall, tag your college in the comments!

A seed buried in the ground can look forgotten before it finally grows.

Sometimes God works the same way in our lives. The waiting season before acceptance letters. The uncertainty of choosing a major. The friendships that changed. The prayers that still feel unanswered.

What feels hidden or delayed may actually be the season God uses to strengthen your faith, form your character, and prepare you for the mission He is calling you to.

This is why Catholic formation matters before entering college. A degree can prepare you for a career, but remaining rooted in Christ prepares you for life.

“And we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him.” — Romans 8:28 (RSV-CE)

The story God is writing in your life is not finished yet.
