November 20th is a day set aside to honor and remember trans individuals who we have lost too soon. Violence against the trans community is all too common and under-reported. We ask allies of the community to hold space for their trans siblings and speak out against transphobia to help prevent these senseless tragedies. Follow this link (https://www.transremembrance.org/insights-and-data) to read stories collected by the Advocates of Trans Equality that honor those individuals we have lost this year.

November is National Native American Heritage Month. This month we celebrate and honor the cultures, wisdom, and resilience of Indigenous people. At Out & About Travels, we respect the claim that Indigenous people have over this land, and want to acknowledge and honor the brutal history that Indigenous groups have with the United States government. Join as we celebrate National Native American Heritage Month this November!

If you're new to learning about q***r history, it can feel very overwhelming figuring out where to start. Books and films can be a great place to start. At the bottom of this post are links to books and films that are good starting points. The GLBT museum in San Francisco has online exhibits that provide a great learning opportunity from anywhere in the world. LGBT organizations like PFLAG have resource pages to learn more about their history. Often overlooked, but perhaps the most important connection to q***r history are our q***r elders. Volunteering or participating in events with your local LGBT center can help get you connected with elders in the community. Let us know what you've learned this LGBT history month!

October 15th, 2025 is International Pronoun Day! This day was created to celebrate and make commonplace the sharing and usage of pronouns (such as she, he, they) and neopronouns (such as xe, e, ze). Everyone has pronouns, and everyone deserves to have their identity respected by having their correct pronouns used. The best way to help shift society for people who are trans, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming is to make sharing pronouns a normal part of society. Add pronouns to your bios, introduce yourself with your pronouns, and always ask rather than assume someone else's pronouns. Do your part to help build a more inclusive society today!

Officially celebrated for the first time in 1992, Indigenous People's Day began as a counter celebration to the widely recognized Columbus Day. The accepted practice of honoring Christopher Columbus' "discovery" of America is just one example of a flattening of indigenous life in the name of colonial expansionist progress. A decimation of existing advanced societies in the Americas through forced assimilation, spread of disease, and massacres is lauded as a success of European settler homogenization.

To instead honor and celebrate the rich culture and history of First Americans is a rejection of that narrative, and a forced look in the mirror for those who have not considered the implications of celebrating genocide. The ramifications of European settlement still affect Indigenous Americans and First Peoples across the globe, giving more reason to recognize the history of resilience in these communities.

Lorena Borjas was a Mexican-American community figure, leader, and trans/immigrant rights activist in her neighborhood in Queens, New York. She was born in Veracruz in Mexico before immigrating to the US at age 21, with the intent to undergo hormone therapy and transition to live freely as a woman.

After years of informal mutual aid and community support, she decided to dedicate her life to activism in 1995 and organized her first of many marches in support of transgender rights.

Known as the mother of the trans Latinx community in NY, she lived up to that moniker through her actions. She opened her home as a weekly HIV testing clinic to s*x workers. She facilitated a clean syringe exchange for women undergoing hormone therapy. She took to the streets in search of any women in need of help, connecting them to social services or providing them with condoms and food.

She lived her life serving the community she found love and safety in, and lives on in her inspiration for others to do the same!

Happy National Coming Out Day from all of here at Out and About Travels!

Whether you’ve been out for years or are sharing your truth for the very first time today, we see you and we celebrate your courage.

Coming out is never easy, especially in a world that too often meets authenticity with ignorance and resistance. Just remember: your truth is powerful, your existence is valid, and you deserve to be loved for who you are, not for who people want you to be.

Stand tall. Stand proud. Stand together.

LGBTQ History Month, celebrated throughout the month of October in the US and in February in the UK, highlights LGBTQ history and important figures throughout history that identified as part of the community. A suburban St. Louis high school teacher, Rodney Wilson, is credited with the creation of LGBTQ history month after receiving backlash when he came out publicly as gay during a history lesson in 1994. His public admission came as he was discussing the meaning of the pink triangle used in N**i Germany to identify someone as gay. Afterwards, he felt that it was important to highlight q***r history that isn't typically found in history textbooks. So please join us this month as we highlight q***r history and let us know who you would like to see highlighted in the comments.

Sylvia Rivera (July 2, 1951 – February 19, 2002) was a LGBTQIA+ activist, community organizer, and outspoken advocate for the marginalized youth within the q***r community. Rivera became a prominent figure in the early gay liberation movement and spent her life fighting for the rights of q***r, trans, and unhoused people.

For much of her adult life, Rivera identified as a drag queen most of her life and later came out as transgender, exploring how the rigid boundaries of gender and s*xuality should and can be explored. She was a close friend and collaborator of Marsha P. Johnson, with whom she co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), which provided housing and support to houseless q***r and trans youth in New York City at a time when few resources existed for them.

Rivera’s activism was rooted in lived experience and never shying away from calling out exclusion within the LGBTQ+ movement, especially the marginalization of trans people and people of color. Her legacy continues to inspire new generations of activists committed to justice, inclusion, and radical care.

Here at Out & About Travels, we recognize and celebrate the "B" in LGBTQ+. Despite making up a large part of the q***r community, bis*xual individuals often face erasure or stigma. Bis*xual Awareness Week (9/16-9/23) aims to increase visibility and acceptance of bis*xuality. At OAT, we strive to uplift and honor their lived experiences.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed in the US between September 15th and October 15th, coinciding with "El Grito de Dolores" celebrated every September 16th in Mexico.

El Grito de Dolores, or the Cry of Dolores, marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence against Spain and sparked the broader emergence of a separate "Hispanic" identity.

While Hispanic simply refers to a person from a Spanish-speaking country or with Spanish-speaking ancestors, it encompasses a diverse spectrum of cultures and geographic locations.

This month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate all Hispanic-identifying peoples, taking time to appreciate the rich history found in the Spanish-speaking world.
