We are so proud to honor Twyla Nichols, Assistant Principal for the Visual and Performing Arts School in Jonesboro, as an Arisa Health Mental Health Champion for 2026. She is the kind of person every school needs and every child deserves. She doesn’t just check in on students—she truly knows them. Twyla takes the time, every single day, to look beyond behaviors or quick moments and really understand what’s going on underneath. She knows our students, their families, their stories, and their needs in a way that makes her support incredibly meaningful. When a student is having a tough moment, Twyla is often the one they turn to. She has a calm, steady presence and a gift for helping students reset when they’re overwhelmed. More importantly, she makes them feel safe. Students know she will listen—really listen—and that they can trust her.
Twyla also goes above and beyond to support our staff. When she knows a family is struggling, she doesn’t wait—she steps in. She makes the calls, finds resources, and helps connect families to the support they need. She’s always looking out for others and finding ways to lighten the load for both students and teachers. As Twyla prepares to retire, it’s impossible not to reflect on the legacy she is leaving behind. She has been a true champion for students. Her deep, personal knowledge of each child and her ability to nurture, calm, and guide them through difficult moments is something that simply cannot be replaced. The impact she has made will continue to be felt long after she leaves. What stands out most about Twyla is her heart. She leads with care in everything she does, and it shows in the relationships she builds. Because of her, students feel seen, supported, and valued. Twyla Nichols is a true mental health champion, and our school is better because of her.
Arisa Health is recognizing "Mental Health Champions" at various schools who are making a positive difference.
