Every September, the members of Norris Wright Cuney Grand Chapter proudly lace up our sneakers and walk with a purpose during Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

The annual walks are more than just a few miles; it's a commitment to raising awareness, honoring warriors and survivors, supporting families, and inspiring hope for a future free from sickle cell disease.

Why do we walk?

๐Ÿฉธ Because Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard, sticky, and sickle-shaped instead of round. These misshapen cells can cause various life-threatening complications. And we believe that every step we take represents hope for those living with sickle cell disease, support for their families, and a commitment to increasing awareness in our communities.

Here are a few facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), two of the most trusted U.S. public health authorities on sickle cell disease:

โค๏ธ More than 100,000 people in the United States are living with sickle cell disease.
โค๏ธ Approximately 1 in 365 Black or African American babies is born with sickle cell disease.
โค๏ธ There is no universal cure, and many individuals face lifelong medical challenges, frequent hospitalizations, and ongoing treatment.
โค๏ธ Early diagnosis, education, research, and community support can improve quality of life and outcomes.

So, we encourage everyone to ๐Ÿ’™ Find a walk. Start a walk. Join a walk. ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Lace up your shoes. โค๏ธ Walk for someone who can't. ๐Ÿค And remember that together, we can make a lasting impact.

Norris Wright Cuney Grand Chapter, recognizes that awareness is the first step toward education, hope, healing, and stronger communities.

Throughout September, we proudly stand with individuals, families, and advocates raising awareness for causes that impact lives every day. While this list is not all-inclusive, it highlights just a few of the many important observances recognized this month.

Find your cause. Support your awareness. Be the difference in someone's life.

Together, through education, advocacy, and service, we can inspire hope, create meaningful change, and build healthier communities for all.
