With heavy hearts, the Hugh Gassner Fire Company and South Spring Valley Fire District mourn the loss of ex-Chief and 29-year life member John Schaber, a man whose laugh could outshine a siren and who always got a kick out of his own jokes. Joining in 1996 at 17 years old, John followed his stepfather, Lloyd "Bill" Jablin, brother Chris, and mother Patricia into the fire service. Even after the heartbreaking loss of Bill in the line of duty in 1998, John's passion for firefighting never dimmed, steady as a lighthouse in a storm. He climbed the ranks-Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, and Chief from 2012 to 2014-with a quiet grit that made you glad he was the one charging into the flames with you. A proud member of the Ramapo Chiefs, Rockland County Chiefs, and Rockland County Volunteer Firemen's Association, John's knowledge of the fire service was matched only by his love for bagpipes, cats, and his niece Sarah, who was his entire world. Approachable, always ready to lend a hand, he could lighten the heaviest mood with a quip and a smirk. John's legacy-equal parts courage, heart, and dry humor-will keep us warm and chuckling through the tears.

On Veterans Day, we honor the courage and sacrifice of all military veterans who have served our nation. Among these heroes is Hugh Jerome Gassner Jr., a Petty Officer Third Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Born in Spring Valley, New York, Gassner served as a Signalman and was tragically killed in action on June 6, 1944, during the Normandy invasion. His bravery is commemorated with a Purple Heart and through the Hugh Gassner Fire Company in Chestnut Ridge, NY. Today, we remember veterans like Gassner for their unwavering dedication and service.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Warren Salle, a cherished member of the Hugh Gassner Fire Company for over 50 years. Warren was not just a dedicated firefighter; he served as a commissioner for over 20 years, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
His wisdom and advice were treasured, and every conversation with him felt meaningful. He had a remarkable ability to listen, making everyone feel valued and understood.Warren was a hardworking family man who dedicated his life to serving others, both in his role at the firehouse and at home. He was a devoted husband, loving father to two children, and an adoring grandfather to his two grandchildren.
As he approached retirement at the end of this year, he looked forward to embracing full-time grandpa duties—spending time outdoors, sharing stories, and creating lasting memories with those he loved most.Warren often spoke about his grandchildren with such pride and joy; they were his world. His love for them was evident in every conversation, and it warmed our hearts to see how deeply he cherished those moments. As we mourn the loss of such an incredible man, let us remember the kindness he showed to everyone around him. Rest easy, Warren. Your legacy of love, service, and genuine connection will forever be etched in our hearts. You will be truly missed by all of us at the Hugh Gassner Fire Company and beyond.
