Wider Fairways is deeply saddened by the devastating fires that forced evacuations and destroyed homes. Our hearts are full as we search for ways to help.

Our organization focuses on youth golfers from underserved communities and families facing financial stress. We know there is little we can do during this immediate crisis, but we are committed to helping young golfers rebuild and recover.

We know insurance may cover lost or destroyed clubs, equipment, or apparel. But payouts can be slow. That’s why we want to help fill the gap in the interim.

We are currently speaking with potential partners and sponsors to establish a dedicated recovery fund. Over the next few weeks, we will share formal details on how this program will operate.

Spokane’s Jim CastroLang has played golf for most of his life; his love for it is so contagious that his son and wife caught the bug. Now his granddaughter plays, too, and Jim wants to make sure other children can feel the magic of a smooth stroke on a bright summer day.

That’s where his nonprofit Wider Fairways comes in.

“We want to create wider access to golf,” CastroLang said. “We have a lot of underserved communities where kids do not even get introduced to golf. We want to bring more kids into the game and make it more financially possible for families to have their kids play golf.”

Wider Fairways functions as a connector, a bridge to find those in underserved communities and facilitate their involvement in golf.

“We connect you to resources close to you, and work and journey with your family to help access those resources, including adult mentors,” CastroLang said. “We will be there to help find ways to make the sport affordable to you.”

Wider Fairways is a new program. CastroLang shares the message every chance he gets, including at farmers’ markets, such as a recent one in Fairwood. It is his chance to spread a vision of inclusive and supportive fairways where all children have the opportunity to learn the sport his family loves.

“My granddaughter started golf at five years old and is getting pretty good,” CastroLang remembered. “She looked at me the other day, totally unprompted, and said, "Papa, I'm proud of you.” And I said, "What are you talking about? She said, "I'm proud of you for starting Wider Fairways.”
