Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) is a national organization that brings white people into fights for racial and economic justice. Our SURJ Circle in Spokane works through a local, in-person model coordinated with national SURJ efforts. You can read about SURJ at the link attached https://surj.org/about/
Are you interested in getting involved and taking action working toward racial and economic justice? Are you interested in supporting and protecting our immigrant neighbors? Our Spokane SURJ Circle is currently in the stage of establishing connections with many other wonderful local organizations whose mission and goals align with ours to determine how we can best support others, ensure we do not duplicate work and identify where our efforts and energy are most needed. SURJ Spokane currently has two areas of focus: Non-Compliance and Elections.
Non-Compliance Team
Our focus is to plan and carry out strategies that support and protect our local community, with an emphasis on immigrant safety in the face of unjust laws and practices. We work in collaboration with local organizations and use tactics such as rallies, boycotts, strikes, and walkouts.
Within SURJ, we organize to challenge racial injustice and unlawful or unethical actions—particularly those that harm immigrants and others targeted for dissent. Our work centers on education, direct action, and community support through outreach, rights education, and collaboration with immigrant support groups.
Volunteers are organized into work groups supporting outreach, research, media, rallies, and community response efforts. We welcome anyone interested in contributing their skills to get involved.
Elections Team
Our focus is to develop and carry out coordinated strategies to support the election of progressive candidates at the local, state, and federal levels. We work in collaboration with community partners to build political power rooted in equity, justice, and accountability.
Currently, we are working with organizations across Spokane County to identify, support, and elect a new U.S. House representative for Washington’s 5th Congressional District. We are also compiling a shared, up-to-date resource outlining the work of local election groups to avoid duplication and strengthen coordination.
Our efforts focus on coordination, research and information sharing, and community outreach—including voter engagement and candidate support. Volunteers are organized into work groups supporting outreach, research, and communications, and we welcome anyone interested in joining us.
You can email [email protected] if you would like to be added to the email list for future meetings and events. Follow this page for future updates about our work!
