We extend our sincere thanks to RuPaul’s Drag Race and World of Wonder Productions for featuring Jose Sarria in the 'Legends of Drag' segment during the Season 18 Finale. We also gratefully acknowledge their generous $1,000 donation, which will directly support our mission to keep Jose’s legacy alive.

We’ve enjoyed collaborating with the production team over the last few weeks and waited to share this news until the segment officially aired.

Before Pete Buttigieg. Before Stonewall. Before Harvey Milk. There was José Sarria. 🏳️‍🌈

The José Sarria Foundation 👉Jose Sarria Foundation has hosted powerful pop-up museum exhibits in Palm Springs — but now they’re working to permanently rent space for a dedicated Pride Museum honoring his legacy.

This would be a meaningful cultural and educational addition to Palm Springs — preserving early LGBTQ+ political history and making it accessible year-round.

History doesn’t preserve itself.

Jose Sarria held court at the famed Black Cat Cafe from about 1948 to 1963, when the bar was forced to close. The bar was located at 710 Montgomery St in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco.

The spirit of the Black Cat Cafe lives on through us. We carry forward Jose’s mission—defending our rights with the same 'camp' and frivolity he loved—while honoring his mantra to always be 'Thinking Queens.'"
