I went to visit Scot Mertz Sensei (Ryuhoryu) tonight to check out the latest model of the Shureido Sai. I took my 2013 model for a comparison.
2013 size L compared to 2024 size M
The 2024 model has a very nice feel. They feel well balanced, have a very nice fit and are something I would be happy to use for kata.
Oddly the handle dimensions (tuska, and yoko) of the 2024 medium is very similar to the 2013 size L. Only slightly smaller and actually a better fit for me. Strange because I am quite certain I have handled earlier models of Shureido Sai and the medium was noticeable smaller than the large. The over all length of the 2013 size L is ~ 1.5 inches longer than the 2024 size M and that is due to the longer monouchi (the long pointy thing) on the size large.
Good Point: the moto (center where the thumb will rest) is larger and slightly raised that gives a better tactile feel for the thumb. I really like that and wish my 2013 Shureido sai had a larger moto.
Bad Point: The metal feels like junk. It feels rather cheap and not made for impact. Which, I guarantee Shureido will also tell you they are not made for impact. They will tell you that for all of their weapons especially after you break one.
Overall, in just a short time handling the sai, I think they would be great for kata and I would recommend them to someone that doesn’t want to break the bank. I believe Mertz Sensei said these run about ¥17,000 (~$115 today).
Mertz Sensei will do a write-up on the sai in the coming weeks. Look for it on his channels
P.S. I only went to visit Mertz Sensei to meet the coolest cat on the island, Choko. He wasn’t really happy with the picture.
