Town of Speedway Continues Community Listening Sessions for 16th Street Corridor Study
SPEEDWAY, Ind. – July 28, 2026 – The Town of Speedway is continuing its community engagement efforts for the 16th Street Corridor Study by hosting multiple Community Listening Session with the first planned for Thursday, July 30, during the Meadowood Park Concert Series and Market in the Park.
Led by the Speedway Redevelopment Commission (SRC), the study is evaluating the future of one of Speedway's most important corridors. This listening session is an opportunity for residents, business owners, and community stakeholders to ask questions, share concerns, and provide feedback that will help inform the study as it moves forward.

Representatives from the Town of Speedway and the Speedway Redevelopment Commission will be available throughout the evening to discuss the study, answer questions, and listen to community input.
Why Study 16th Street?
When 16th Street was originally designed decades ago, it served as a primary east-west route through Speedway. Today, Crawfordsville Road has become the community’s primary route for through traffic, changing how 16th Street functions within the community.
Rather than serving primarily as a through corridor, 16th Street now connects neighborhoods, schools, parks, churches, businesses, municipal facilities, and other local destinations. The study is evaluating how the corridor can better reflect the way it is used today while preparing for Speedway's future.
The study focuses on three key priorities:
• Improving safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit users.
• Strengthening the neighborhood character by creating a corridor that is more welcoming, attractive, and reflective of the surrounding community.
• Planning for future investment by identifying opportunities that support existing and future businesses, guide infrastructure improvements, and position Speedway to compete for state and federal grant funding.
"This study is about understanding how 16th Street serves our community today, exploring how it can better serve Speedway in the future, and most importantly, listening to the people who use it every day," said Kyle Markley, Economic Development Director. "Our goal is to improve safety, strengthen the neighborhood character of the corridor, and develop a long-term vision that supports Speedway’s future investment and economic vitality. No one knows this corridor better than the residents and businesses who travel it every day, and their input is essential to this conversation."
More Than a Roadway
The 16th Street Corridor Study is a long-range planning effort - not a construction project.
The Speedway Redevelopment Commission is leading the study because its work extends beyond redevelopment. The Commission helps guide long-term planning, supports business growth, evaluates infrastructure needs, pursues grant funding opportunities, and invests in projects that strengthen Speedway's neighborhoods and commercial corridors.
Traffic studies, roadway analysis, safety data, existing conditions, and community feedback will all help shape recommendations for future improvements. The study will provide a roadmap that can guide future design, infrastructure investments, and funding opportunities.
Your Voice Matters
The Town recognizes there are many perspectives regarding the future of 16th Street, and community feedback remains one of the most valuable parts of this planning process.
This study is still in its early stages, and no final decisions have been made. Residents are encouraged to attend the public sessions to learn more about the study, review the latest concepts, ask questions, and share their thoughts. Additional public meetings will be scheduled as concepts are refined so the community can review potential changes, ask questions, and provide feedback that will help guide future designs.
