Speedway Invites Community

to Shape the Future of the 16th Street Corridor

SPEEDWAY, Ind. - June 1, 2026 - The Town of Speedway is launching an exciting new initiative to reimagine one of its most important transportation corridors, and community members are invited to help lead the way.

The 16th Street Corridor Study, focused on the stretch between Main Street and North Mickley Avenue, is now underway. Led by the Town of Speedway Redevelopment Commission, the study will establish a long-term vision for transforming the corridor into a safer, more vibrant, and more connected space for residents, businesses, and visitors.

The West 16th Street corridor serves as a critical community asset, connecting neighborhoods, schools, parks, churches, businesses, municipal facilities, and transit services. Its diverse mix of uses underscores the need for targeted infrastructure improvements that better serve all users while supporting the corridor's long-term growth and vitality.

The study will explore opportunities to:

Reallocate underutilized roadway space
Enhance the corridor's appearance and identity
Improve safety for all users
Expand options for walking, biking, and public transit
Strengthen connectivity between neighborhoods and destinations

Potential improvements could include dedicated bike facilities, connected sidewalks, upgraded transit stops, streetscape enhancements, and other multimodal infrastructure designed to create a safer and more accessible corridor.

"The 16th Street corridor serves as an important gateway and community connection in Speedway," said Kyle Markley, Economic Development Director for the Town of Speedway. "This study gives us a unique opportunity to evaluate how the corridor functions today and identify improvements that will better serve residents, businesses, schools, parks, and visitors. By exploring ways to improve safety, mobility, and connectivity for all users, this effort will help establish a foundation for future design, investment, and infrastructure improvements along this key community corridor. We strongly encourage everyone to share their input and help shape a vision that reflects Speedway's needs for the future."

The Speedway Redevelopment Commission will utilize the study findings to develop strategies for reallocating existing underutilized road space and prioritizing multimodal accessibility. The recommendations will help guide future design and implementation efforts while identifying potential funding opportunities for infrastructure investments. Ultimately, the study will provide a roadmap for sustainable improvements that enhance connectivity, improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit users, and strengthen economic vitality along one of Speedway's most significant transportation corridors.

The Town of Speedway encourages everyone who lives, works, visits, or travels through the area to participate in the planning process. Residents can learn more and provide feedback by visiting the 16th Street Multimodal Corridor Study website or scanning the QR code available on project materials.

Community input will play a critical role in helping shape the future of this important neighborhood corridor and ensuring the vision reflects the needs and priorities of those who use it every day.
