Today was a hard one for my heart. 💔
Today we went on a rescue and welcomed a beautiful Amazon girl into JoHersBirds South Carolina Parrot Rescue.
As soon as I turned the corner, there she was, watching me as I walked closer and making little noises. She has been such an amazing rider, and I’ve been able to pet her right through the cage. She hasn’t tried to bite me or pull away. Just the sweetest girl.
I don’t know her whole story, and I’m not going to pretend that I do. But I do know that I’m so glad we came for her. I wish I could explain to her that she’s with us now and that we’re going to do everything we can to give her the care she deserves.
I’m sharing these pictures because I want people to understand that this is why rescue matters. Seeing a bird living in conditions like these is heartbreaking. Parrots deserve clean, safe living spaces, proper food, things to keep their minds busy, and the vet care they need. These are living beings who depend on us for everything.
And I really need people to hear this part.
PLEASE reach out BEFORE it gets to this point.
If you’re struggling with your bird, if you don’t know what you’re doing wrong, if you can’t afford everything your bird needs, or if life has changed and you’re having a hard time keeping up, PLEASE talk to us.
I’m not going to tell you that conditions like these are okay, because they’re not. The birds deserve better. But I’m also not going to sit here and shame someone who’s willing to reach out and try to make things better.
You will be met with kindness, not judgment. Understanding, not shaming. Love, not hatred.
Maybe you need some help figuring out your bird’s diet. Maybe you need resources, supplies, or guidance. Maybe things have gotten to a point where surrender is what’s best for your bird. Whatever the situation is, let’s talk about it.
Please don’t wait because you’re scared of what people will think of you. Please don’t let embarrassment or fear keep you from asking for help while your bird is struggling.
I would much rather have someone reach out to me early so we can try to work through things together than have a bird’s situation continue to get worse because someone was afraid of being judged.
That’s what I want this rescue to be. A place people can turn to when they don’t know where else to go. A place where we care about the birds AND treat people with compassion.
At the end of the day, the bird is the one who needs us to speak up. They can’t change their own circumstances. They depend on us to do that for them.
To our sweet Amazon girl, I’m so glad we came for you today. We’re going to take things one day at a time, get to know you, and make sure your needs come first.
And to anyone out there struggling with their parrot, my inbox is open. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you reach out, and you don’t have to be afraid to talk to me.
No bird left behind or forgotten. 🦜❤️
