On June 4th Una Chief 30, Engine 30, Engine 130, Rescue 30, Squad 30, Utility 30, Westview Engine 32, Engine 28, Wingo Park Truck 3, and Battalion 20 responded to a business fire at 2111 Caldwell Road. Upon arrival, found a recycling plant with heavy fire conditions. Chief 30 requested two additional engines, and two additional ladder trucks. Defensive fire operations were started. Truck 3 set up on the A side along with Engine 32 and began fire attack. Engine 28 established a water supply to Engine 32. Engine 30 assisted on the A side. Engine 130, Engine 33, and Ladder 85 set up ladder operations on the D side of the structure. Engine 63, Hilltop Engine 15 and Tower 60 set up ladder operations on the C side of the structure. Utility 30 set up Rehab and was assisted by Spartanburg EMS. All other units arrived and their manpower was used as needed. There was limited access to the structure. The roof collapsed during fire operations and made it hard to reach the seat of the fire. All units operated on scene for several hours, before the product could be brought out to be broken down so that it could be extinguished. An excavator had to be brought in to remove the roof materials from the building. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Arson Investigstor was requested to help determine the cause of the fire. Duke Energy was requested and responded for live power lines down. We would like to thank all the departments that assisted with fire operations. We would also like to thank Glenn Springs and Tyger River for relieving our crews that had been on scene for 16 hours. I would like to thank the 14 volunteers from Una. Some of these individuals took time off from their jobs to be on the fire ground. That is dedication to their community. Great job by all personnel on scene. There have been many hot spot fires and smoke in the area calls since the fire. Small fires and smoke will remain in the area for a few more days.
