We hear that in our inbox almost daily.

And honestly?

By the time most people reach out, the situation already feels completely out of control.

๐Ÿ˜ชThe spraying.
๐Ÿ˜ชThe fighting.
๐Ÿ˜ชThe kittens everywhere.
๐Ÿ˜ชThe sick cats.
๐Ÿ˜ชThe anxious personal pets.
๐Ÿ˜ชThe nonstop reproduction.

People are frustrated.
Overwhelmed.
And tired of watching the population grow.

You cannot keep removing cats while reproduction is still happening and expect the problem to magically disappear.

Because if the food source still exists
and unfixed cats are still nearbyโ€ฆ

And a hard truth?

Then those cats reproduce.
Then THEIR kittens reproduce.

And suddenly everyone is asking:
โ€œWhere did all these cats come from?โ€

Thatโ€™s exactly why we push spay and neuter so heavily instead of focusing only on removal.

People want the cats gone.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ less suffering
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ less reproduction
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ less sick cats
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ less kittens born outside
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ less overwhelmed neighborhoods
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ less crisis situations once the population has already exploded

And that starts at the source.

Monthly News from the White County Humane Society

Weโ€™d like to begin this monthโ€™s article by thanking everyone that came out to support our Spring Yard Sale, held May 1st and 2nd. (Donators, setup help, buyers, volunteers). A special โ€œthank-youโ€ to the White County High School JROTC members who showed up Wednesday after school to help with set up. These fine young people are full of energy and enthusiasm. Their parents, teachers and mentors should be very proud of them.
Sales and cash donations, netted $1,800.00. Every penny will be used to offset the cost of spay/neuter surgeries for White and Van Buren countiesโ€™ owners, in need of financial assistance in having their pets spayed/neutered.
April was busy. WCHS Spay/Neuter Assistance programโ€™s provided the necessary support to complete 100 surgeries. (17 female dogs, 7 male dogs, 37 female cats and 39 male cats). Sixty-two cats and dogs made the trip to Lebanon or Dunlap onboard our monthly transports. Twenty four surgeries were performed at the Major Mike Shipley Clinic in Cookeville. Private veterinarians served 14 animals. This yearโ€™s current financial assistance to families (as of April 30th), stands at 434.
The WCHS transport vanโ€™s air conditioning went out. To transport safely, air conditioning is a must. Fortunately, it was not a tremendous cost. The van was originally purchased by the โ€œPals of the Pooches at the White County Animal Shelterโ€ (POPS.) Another nonprofit group that utilized grants and donations to secure the van. Prior to WCHS obtaining it, the van made numerous trips up North transporting shelter dogs to rescues and shelters in New York, Chicago, New Jersey and other locations. During COVID, many rescues and shelters could no longer accommodate White Countyโ€™s need to send animals to other states where the rates/possibilities of adoption were much higher than here. POPS generously donated the van to WCHS, which has been a blessing these past few years, enabling us to sponsor our twice monthly transports. (Hence we can provide services to approximately 60 additional pets each month).
The transports are also a blessing to pet owners who donโ€™t have reliable transportation, or canโ€™t meet the clinic drop off times due to work or family commitments. Our van is nearly 15 years old, has some โ€œbattle scarsโ€ and has logged several hundred thousand miles, but it gets the job done. At some point, weโ€™ll have to find a replacement, but hopefully not in the near future. When animal welfare groups work together, it increases our ability to make a difference in the lives of innocent animals. Weโ€™re very grateful to POPS for their generous gift. (POPS still has access to the van when they need it).
Please continue to support our aluminum can collection program. Weโ€™re currently taking in an average of over $300.00 a month from the sale of cans donated by our supporters. We do ask, however, that you not place plastic, tin, glass, etc in our recycle cage. Separating and re-bagging cans is not a pleasant job, but itโ€™s one we do for the love of animals and our passionate desire to cut down on pet overpopulation. Please help us out by making sure your bags contain aluminum only. Our drop off location is 390 Sewell Driveโ€ฆenter the parking lot at the sign that reads โ€œLots 1-4.โ€
If you would like to learn more about our organization, or are interested in joining, please attend one of our meetings. We meet the second Monday of each month at the White County Public Library at 3pm. For those who are unable to attend meetings, we would still love to have you join our group.
If you need additional information or help having your pets spayed or neutered, please call 931-931-8377 and leave your name and number. Weโ€™ll get back with you just as soon as possible.

News from the White County Humane Society
Greetings from the members of the White County Humane Society. We hope you all had an enjoyable Easter Season, and are enjoying the warm, sunny weather April brings. March was another busy month for the Humane Society. We funded a total of 101 surgeries, which included 20 female dogs, 12 male dogs, 39 female cats and 30 male cats. Sixty four cats and dogs were transported to Joy Clinic in Lebanon or to the Sequatchie Valley S/N Clinic in Dunlap, 16 were fixed at the Major Mike Shipley Clinic in Cookeville and an additional 21 were sent to private vet clinics. We have a wonderful relationship with all these clinics, and are very fortunate that they are willing to work with us.
Plans are in the works for our Spring Yard Sale, which will be held Friday and Saturday, May 1st and 2nd at the American Legion (5 W Maple St) in Sparta. Weโ€™ll be setting up on Thursday, April 30 from 10am to 2pm. If you would like to donate items to our sale, they can be dropped off at the American Legion during those hours. All donations are welcome, with the exception of clothing and drinking glasses. Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund our spay/neuter assistance program. Please stop by, do some shopping, and help support a very worthwhile cause. Weโ€™re also looking for volunteers who would like to help with set-up, working the actual event, or tear down/pack up. Contact us on Facebook or call 931-935-8377 to volunteer your time.
We recently placed an order for several dozen Humane Society t-shirts. Online sales have been slow, so weโ€™re hoping you may be more inclined to purchase a shirt if you can actually see it. Weโ€™ll be selling our shirts at the yard sale, and at other events such as Liberty Square. You can also purchase a t-shirt at the Purple Iris in Sparta.
Area Veterinary Clinics will be sponsoring Rabies Clinics on May 2nd (Sparta Veterinary Services), May 16th (Riverside Veterinary Hospital) and May 23rd (Bluegrass Clinic.) All three clinics will run from 8am โ€“ Noon. This is an excellent opportunity to get your cat or dog up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. Cost is just $12.00.
In the next few days weโ€™ll be submitting our annual grant request to the TN Department of Agriculture โ€œAnimal Friendlyโ€ Grant. Did you know that this grant is funded by proceeds from the sale of โ€œSpay/Neuterโ€ license plates? Each time you purchase a Spay/Neuter plate, a portion of the additional cost (itโ€™s $35.00 more than a regular plate) goes to a fund which supports spay/neuter programs in Tennessee. The White County Humane Society has applied for and received many grants through this program. Hundreds of White County cats and dogs have been spayed or neutered using funds from this grant. If youโ€™re thinking of purchasing specialty plates, please consider choosing โ€œSpay/Neuterโ€ plates.
If you need assistance having your pets spayed or neutered, please call us at 931-935-8377 and leave a message. Your call will be returned as soon as possible. If youโ€™re interested in learning more about our organization or would like to become a volunteer, weโ€™d like to invite you to attend one of our meetings. We meet the 2nd Monday of the month at the White County Library at 3pm. The public is invited, and new members are always welcome.
