Rotary Club of Sparks The Rotary Club of Sparks is an organization of business and professional leaders. Our motto? Service Above Self.

Our group meets weekly and is proud to call itself a nonpolitical and nonreligious organization and to welcome members of all cultures, races and creeds. The Rotary Club of Sparks is an organization of business and professional leaders located in the Reno-Sparks area of Nevada who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and strive to build and develop peace

and goodwill on a local and national level. Membership of The Rotary Club of Sparks represents an accurate cross-section of Reno-Sparks business and professional men and women. Our main objective is service, whether that be in the community, the workplace or throughout the city and the world. Members of Rotary, both in our local organization and worldwide, develop community service projects that address today’s most critical issues, including:

Children at risk
Poverty and hunger
Environmental preservation
Illiteracy
Violence

We also support programs for young people, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students as well as teachers and other professionals, and vocational/career development.

Our speaker this week was Tray Abney discussing the questions surrounding data centers in Nevada.

Data Centers house a collection of computer servers that store and manage data and provide services to other computers. Six data centers exist within the City of Reno limits. Nevada has roughly 70 data centers in the State. Concerns over the facilities include their high electricity and water usage. Tray discussed projects under consideration and what the facilities mean to us. Thank you Tray for your excellent presentation to our club.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) provides critical support for abused and neglected children who are under the protection of the juvenile court. CASA volunteer citizens step into children's lives and offer trust, consistency, and stability for the duration of legal proceedings.

Bill Thimmesch, Chairman of the Board of CASA, is a retired federal employee with over 20 years experience developing and delivering effective training programs for the federal and state government. Presently he's an adjunct instructor at UNR in the department of Communications Studies.

Great meeting today with our District Governor, Kurt Raffetto. Some highlights include Paul Harris Recognitions to Sally Morrin & Jack Westermeyer, Silent Rotarian award to Bev Elston, High Flyer Award to Jen Lamb, Major Donor Recognition to Judy Clark and a recognition to the club for last year under Richard Jay’s leadership. We also had a club review with Kurt before our meeting. We certainly covered a lot today!

Our speaker this past week was our own club member, Steve Gage. As wildland fires are making the news, Steve shared with us how fire agencies respond to wildland fires, how they organize for longer term fires and terminologies used.

Steve has over 45 years of wildland fire experience starting as a seasonal firefighter, and advancing through the ranks to Incident Commander leading teams of professionals managing fires.

Your social media guy fully intended to capture all of the members “Ringing the Bell” on President Jane’s first official day. We had a really good problem in that too many people stepped up and rang the bell! It was too hard to keep track of all the bell ringers. One that stood out was Jane’s daughter KC who rang the bell 5 times in honor of her mother!
