New Haven RTC Voices

New Haven RTC Voices We are a group of individuals who attended New Haven RTC. We have come together to challenge the troubled teen industry by using our voices to tell our stories.

We aim to question the status quo and protect vulnerable youth.

This Pride Month, we stand with the Q***r and Trans youth in the Troubled Teen Industry. At programs like New Haven RTC, LGBTQ+ youth have reported being targeted on the basis of their identity, facing discrimination, harassment, conversion therapy, and other forms of abuse and mistreatment.

This recent NH attendee describes some of the transphobia he faced while at New Haven, and his journey of self acceptance and resilience after leaving.

Amidst ongoing attacks on Trans rights in the U.S., programs like New Haven RTC continue to prey on vulnerable youth.

Q***rness does not need to be “fixed.”

This former New Haven RTC attendee was contacted by a staff member from their private Facebook account to write a Google review about New Haven. While the staff member asks for an “honest” review, they clearly suggest that the only “honest” review is a positive review.

It is a violation of Google terms of service for a business to selectively solicit positive reviews. Additionally, we find it inappropriate and unprofessional for staff members to contact former students from their personal social media accounts.

Many people use google reviews to help determine if a business they want to go to (or send their kids to..) is reputable. Google has rules about these reviews to make sure they honestly reflect these businesses but sometimes these businesses try to break the rules. Google won’t know about these rule breaking reviews unless we report them. If you see a Google review that violates these guidelines be sure to report it!

We want to welcome everyone to our page, here are some of the guiding principles that inform our work and activism and make it possible for us to continue educating and supporting each other. New Haven RTC Voices is a small volunteer team of former New Haven Attendees dedicated to raising awareness about the Troubled Teen Industry and sharing our experiences.

We have a testimonial workgroup coming up this Sunday February 2nd at 4:30 EST. If you want more information on the workgroup or how to get involved with the project, feel free to message us. We can be reached via DM or through our website newhavenrtcvoices.org

New Haven Voices would like to invite you to a testimonial writing workgroup on Sunday February 2d at 4:30pm EST.

This is an opportunity to write about your experience at New Haven and support the community through the testimonial writing process. There is no requirement to share, or even to write.

Please note that this is a testimony workgroup facilitated by former attendees, and it is not a therapy group or crisis management group.

Please message us for more details!

Last month the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act (S.1351/H.R.2955) was signed into law. This piece of federal legislation is the first of its kind, aimed at gaining insights into the state of youth residential treatment programs and congregate care facilities and compiling reports on the national level. These reports would allow for more transparency and accountability in funding sources, use of restraints and seclusion, abuse reports, and outcome studies. These reports will also consult with TTI survivors, families, and communities, rather than program CEOs and lobbyists.

SICAA is product of dedicated advocacy efforts by survivors of youth residential programs and their allies. SICAA would not be possible without the hard work and bravery of those who have come forward about their experiences. While we have a long way to go to ensure that youth are protected from institutional abuse and trauma, we celebrate the efforts of everyone who has worked tirelessly to make their voices heard!

New Haven Voices is dedicated to telling the stories of former NH attendees and educating the public about the TTI, but we have limited resources when it comes to person power. Our small team of volunteers depends on this amazing community to come together and support each other in this work.

Here are things you can do to help make a difference:

- Further engage with our social community by joining our Discord server

- Participate in a testimonial workshop: share your story or support your peers

Join a team! (no experience necessary)

- Graphics team: design posts, templates, backgrounds, poppies

- Research team: research educational posts
- Editing team: help with grammar, simplifying, accessible language, captions

- Community engagement team: lead discussions on discord, attend workshops

With the winter holidays approaching, we send our love and support to members of our community who may be struggling. Holidays at and after New Haven can be painful and lonely whether you are with family or without. You are not alone.

With American Thanksgiving this week, we would like to draw attention to an issue that affects the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island.

Hundreds of thousands of Native children across the countries known as The United States and Canada were removed from their families and held captive at Residential Schools. Many children did not survive the abuse at these facilities, and the trauma that the survivors experienced is ongoing. Another form of violence enacted by these Boarding Schools was the targeted cultural erasure, which has had lasting impacts on survivors and their families.

This “Thanksgiving,” consider donating to support survivors of Native American Boarding Schools and their advocacy. (Link in Bio).
