Ending Violence is a community effort. Thank you for the reflection, support, and action you have done this month to end Sexual Violence. We are grateful for your continued education, accountability, and advocacy within ourselves and others after this month is over. It is incredible to see the individuals in our communities come together to recognize the importance of education, prevention, and support for survivors of sexual assault. As the longest-standing worldwide awareness event for Sexual Assault Awareness, Denim Day has been an essential show of support for survivors. Thank you to all who participated in this event with us.

Although this month is over, the work does not end here. We ask that you continue the momentum and advocacy that we have witnessed and participated in this month. Encourage our legislators to create policies that support survivors. Hold our Law Enforcement Agencies and District Attorneys accountable and let them know that we, as a community, care and support our survivors in their healing and paths to justice. Let’s continue to educate ourselves and reflect on the ways we may be perpetuating violence. Plant the seeds of change within ourselves, our families, and our communities. Think of survivors every time you pull on that pair of denim shorts or wear your favorite jean jacket. .utah

Denim Day began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a r**e conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who r**ed her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses, and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence. .utah

Every Earth Day we take this day to show gratitude for our planet, its beauty, and all it does to support us. As we near the end of Sexual Assault Awareness month, we would also like to give some recognition and support to survivors of sexual violence.

Today, we ask you all to Plant for Change. Caring for and growing plants can be a ther**eutic activity, and we want to recognize all the growth, life, beauty, and healing of the survivors in our communities by taking some time to garden and grow some new life today. Show support for survivors, and your intolerance for violence by joining us and planting some new plants in your garden and homes today!

Here are some ideas of what to plant in support of our survivors:

Aloe Vera: Healing and Protection
Lavender: Healing
Daisy: Anti-Anxiety & Clean Air
Daffodil: New Beginnings
Golden Pothos: Persevering & Longing
Philodendron: Love of Nature & Growth
Spider Plant: Mindfulness & Health

It will take our entire community working together to end sexual assault, harassment, & abuse. We are responsible to each other for taking direct or indirect action to prevent & interrupt harms we witness in our community. And, in the aftermath of harm, we are responsible for being compassionate, validating, and supporting survivors/victims (including ourselves). Reflect on situations when you could have intervened but held back. What were your barriers in those moments? Hone your intervention skills by taking FREE online training from Right To Be (formerly Hollaback!). .utah

Join us this April as we organize for national Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Together with our community partners & allied neighbors (hopefully you!), we ignite this month-long campaign for its 21st consecutive year to address sexual assault in our communities.

During SAAM 2022 we aim to 1. strengthen community bonds, 2. take direct & indirect action from where we stand to prevent & interrupt sexual assault, harassment, & abuse, and 3. honor & hold space for survivors/victims of sexual assault by listening, being a friend, sharing resources, & supporting individual healing journeys.

You can take action during SAAM in lots of ways. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center has issued an Instagram challenge—responding to NSVRC’s daily prompts will help raise awareness & educate our communities. This account will highlight ways to get involved locally & over social media.

Today, consider promoting SAAM by decorating your online spaces with teal (NSVRC has even designed a custom Zoom background!) and having an online or in-person conversation with someone about ending sexual assault in our community.

Next up, wear teal & share a selfie on April 6: SAAM Day of Action. .utah

Throughout Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, it is necessary for teens to feel empowered to find ways to be open about the things going on in their lives. When you’re isolated from your community, it is harder to recognize signs of unhealthy relationships. Below are examples of things that can be isolating and ways to find community support.

Be wary of adults who treat you like peers/who tell you your age doesn’t matter

Find someone you can tell about your relationship, even if you can’t be publicly open

You deserve people around you who won’t be upset when you share your time with other people

If something feels weird or off in a relationship, tell someone! Trust your gut

Create a list of people in your life that feel safe and supportive

Identify a trusted adult in your life who you can ask questions about relationships

Reach out to community resources like & and other orgs supporting teen relationships

Seek out counseling services

Community is about connection, belonging, and care. We are our best selves when the people around us have our backs and empower us to be safe and fulfilled. If you want to learn more about leaning on your community to develop healthy relationship dynamics, join us for our teen workshop THIS SATURDAY! Register for free at the link in our bio.
